Characterization of a new bio-based and biodegradable blends of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) and poly(butylene-co-succinate-co-adipate)

Benjamin Le Delliou et al.

Summary: Melt blending of PHBV and PBSA was investigated, and it was found that they were immiscible. The crystallization rate of both materials increased in the blends, and the rigidity could be modulated by adding PBSA, while the elongation at break was governed by PHBV.

Soft-rigid synergistic reinforcement of PHBV composites with functionalized cellulose nanocrystals and amorphous recycled polycarbonate

Fang Li et al.

Summary: Composite films of PHBV/PC/CNC-Cc were prepared via a Pickering emulsion approach, showing a significant soft-rigid synergistic effect on the performance of the PHBV matrix with the addition of PC and CNC-Cc. The best composite film exhibited outstanding mechanical strength/toughness, UV shielding, antioxidant, and antibacterial abilities due to the dynamic competition effect of amorphous PC and rigid CNC-Cc on the PHBV microstructure and interaction.

Quality assessment of post-consumer plastic bottles with joint entropy method: A case study in Beijing, China

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The recycling of plastic bottles is crucial for reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and safeguarding the environment. This study introduces an indicator based on the joint entropy method to assess the quality of post-consumer plastic bottles (PCPBs) in the collection stage. The research conducted in Beijing, China, revealed a decrease in the quality of PCPBs throughout the collection system, with residential area type identified as a key factor influencing quality at collection sites.

Challenges and new opportunities on barrier performance of biodegradable polymers for sustainable packaging

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers have attracted significant attention due to their environmentally friendly compostability. However, challenges remain for their practical application in packaging, particularly in addressing gas/moisture barrier issues. Various strategies have been researched for decades to overcome these challenges, such as chain architecture tailoring, crystallinity, melt blending/multi-layer co-extrusion, nanotechnology, and surface coating. This review focuses on improving the oxygen/water vapor barrier properties of biodegradable polymers and discusses the limitations of current methods and potential solutions.

Rheological Characterization and Modeling of Thermally Unstable Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)

Silvia Lajewski et al.

Summary: The use of conventional plastics and plastic pollution have raised environmental concerns, prompting the need for more sustainable alternatives such as bioplastics like PHBV. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of PHBV and its processing parameters through rheological testing. The results provide valuable insights into the rheological behavior and characteristics of PHBV at high temperatures.
