Summary: The timing of bud break in peach trees is determined by both chilling and heat requirements, with potential variations in heat requirements between different accessions. This study aimed to investigate the diversity of heat requirement traits in peach germplasm and found that selecting cultivars with increased growing degree hours would be a safer and more reliable strategy for delaying bloom than increasing the base temperature for heat accumulation.

Estimating Heat Requirement for Flowering in Peach Germplasm

Summary: This study investigated the heat requirement (HR) of 136 peach cultivars and its relationship with chilling and bloom date. The results revealed a high variation in HR among cultivars and years, and showed a positive correlation between bloom date and chilling, and a negative correlation between chilling and HR. Seasonal effect was observed on the correlation between bloom date and HR.

PhenoFlex - an integrated model to predict spring phenology in temperate fruit trees

Summary: A new dormancy model named PhenoFlex was developed, which combines the Dynamic Model for chill accumulation with the Growing-Degree-Hours model for heat accumulation in a flexible manner. Compared to several benchmark models, PhenoFlex showed superior predictive performance in projecting bloom dates for apples and pears.
