Alkaloids constituents from the roots of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. with their cytotoxic activities

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Two new alkaloids, phranisines A-B, along with two known compounds, N-p-Coumaroyl serotonin and N-p-coumaroyl-tryptamine, were isolated from Phragmites australis roots. Quantum-chemical electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations were used to determine the absolute configuration of compounds 1-2. Compounds 2-4 showed moderate cytotoxic activities against HeLa cell lines.

Antibacterial activity of bacteria isolated from Phragmites australis against multidrug-resistant human pathogens

Vania Delfino et al.

Summary: This study found that 7 out of 21 bacteria associated with Phragmites australis roots were able to inhibit the growth of most multidrug-resistant pathogens, potentially leading to the discovery of new antibiotics against bacteria that cannot be killed using commonly used antibiotics.

Amoebicidal activity of Cassia angustifolia extract and its effect on Acanthamoeba triangularis autophagy-related gene expression at the transcriptional level

Rachasak Boonhok et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the amoebicidal activity of Cassia angustifolia Vahl. extract against Acanthamoeba triangularis trophozoite and observed the autophagic response in surviving trophozoites. Further research is needed for the isolation and purification of active compounds, as well as for the investigation of cytotoxicity against human cells and autophagic response at the protein level.

Anti-Acanthamoeba synergistic effect of chlorhexidine and Garcinia mangostana extract or α-mangostin against Acanthamoeba triangularis trophozoite and cyst forms

Suthinee Sangkanu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential of Garcinia mangostana pericarp extract and alpha-mangostin against Acanthamoeba triangularis, along with their combination with chlorhexidine for the treatment of Acanthamoeba infection. The results showed that the extract and alpha-mangostin, when combined with chlorhexidine, exhibited good synergism by reducing the MIC, indicating a promising alternative method for managing Acanthamoeba infection in the future.

Summary: Acanthamoeba keratitis is a widespread infection caused by a unicellular protozoan that mainly affects contact lens wearers and is linked to corneal trauma as well. It is essential to deepen the understanding of risk factors, focus on prevention strategies, and enhance the efficacy of disinfection systems to minimize the risk of infection. Additionally, there is a need for the development of effective diagnostic methods and treatments for this type of corneal infection in the near future.
