The decline of plant mineral nutrition under rising CO2: physiological and molecular aspects of a bad deal

Alain Gojon et al.

Summary: Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration negatively affects C3 plant physiology beyond photosynthesis and carbon metabolism, leading to reduced mineral nutrient concentrations in plant tissues. This poses significant threats to crop quality, nutrient cycles, and carbon sinks in terrestrial agro-ecosystems. The detrimental effect on plant mineral status, particularly nitrogen, is associated with the direct inhibition of key mechanisms of nitrogen uptake and assimilation. Promising strategies for identifying genotypes that can maintain robust nutrient status in a high-CO2 world are also discussed.

The amino acid transporter OsAAP1 regulates the fertility of spikelets and the efficient use of N in rice

Erinaldo Gomes Pereira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence and role of OsAAP1 transporter in various organs and tissues of rice plants. The loss of OsAAP1 function in mutant lines led to reduced growth and grain yield, as well as decreased absorption, use, and remobilization of nitrogen. The distribution of amino acids was affected in the mutant lines, resulting in accumulation in vegetative organs. Additionally, the fertility of spikelets was severely reduced. These findings highlight the critical role of OsAAP1 in amino acid translocation, spikelet fertility, and grain yield maintenance in rice.

Genome-wide identification and in silico analysis of NPF, NRT2, CLC and SLAC1/SLAH nitrate transporters in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum)

Aman Kumar et al.

Summary: Nitrogen transport is a crucial process in plants, mediated by specialized transmembrane proteins. Plants use a low-affinity transport system and a high-affinity transport system for nitrogen uptake from soil and its distribution within the plant. Nitrate transporters are of great interest in cereal crops as nitrogen fertilizers are extensively used to enhance crop productivity. In this study, we conducted in silico mining of nitrate transporter genes to analyze their structure, phylogenetic relationships, and expression patterns. We identified a total of 412 nitrate transporter genes in the hexaploid wheat genome. Among them, 20 genes were specific to roots, 11 genes were specific to leaves/shoots, and 17 genes were specific to grains/spikes. The proximity of the identified nitrate transporter genes to previously identified marker-trait associations related to nitrogen use efficiency in hexaploid wheat further supports their robustness. Understanding the interaction between the genome and proteome and validating the candidate genes through expression and gene editing studies may offer a foundation for improving the nitrogen use efficiency in cereal crops.
