Assessment of the importance of increasing temperature and decreasing soil moisture on global ecosystem productivity using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

Chaoya Dang et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of global gross primary productivity (GPP) is crucial for estimating the global carbon cycle. This study uses solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) as a proxy for GPP and investigates the impact of soil moisture (SM) and temperature (Ts) changes on SIF. The results show that Ts plays a more important role in SIF in 60% of the vegetation areas, but the importance of SM and Ts varies across different vegetation types and climate zones.

Uncovering the critical soil moisture thresholds of plant water stress for European ecosystems

Zheng Fu et al.

Summary: Understanding the critical soil moisture threshold is crucial for evaluating drought impacts and improving climate models. In Europe, estimating this threshold is challenging, but analyzing relationships between evaporative fraction, vapor pressure deficit, and gross primary production can provide valuable insights. Variations in surface energy partitioning and sensitivities to soil moisture were observed across different vegetation types.

Widespread decline in winds promoted the growth of vegetation

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: Wind speed has a significant impact on vegetation growth, explaining 31.54% of the vegetation variations, higher than other climate factors. Reduction in wind speed has a positive effect on vegetation changes, and considering wind speed can improve vegetation dynamics assessment and model prediction accuracy.

Atmospheric dryness reduces photosynthesis along a large range of soil water deficits

Zheng Fu et al.

Summary: Soil water content affects GPP differently from atmospheric dryness, with an increase in GPP with high soil water content but a decrease when below a threshold. Atmospheric dryness always negatively affects GPP. Earth System Models underestimate the effects of atmospheric dryness and soil water content on GPP.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of rising atmospheric dryness, temperature, and CO2 concentration on global vegetation productivity over the last two decades. It finds that despite the negative impact of increasing VPD, the warming and CO2 fertilization effects contribute to a widespread increase in vegetation productivity.

Converted vegetation type regulates the vegetation greening effects on land surface albedo in arid regions of China

Yixuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between land surface albedo (LSA) and vegetation changes in the arid and semi-arid areas of China. The results show that LSA generally decreased during 2000-2018 in response to significant greening in the region. The conversions of grassland to cultivated land or forest land led to a contraction in LSA change, while the conversions of forest land to other vegetations amplified the change. Greening dominated LSA change, except in the conversion of grassland to forest land where land use/land cover change accounted for a significant portion of LSA change.

Min Luo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impacts of soil moisture and drought on vegetation phenology in the Mongolian Plateau. The results showed a negative trend in soil moisture and an increase in drought, which had significant effects on vegetation phenology. The study also found strong seasonal variations in the influence of soil moisture on vegetation, which decreased with soil depth.

Widespread decline in winds delayed autumn foliar senescence over high latitudes

Chaoyang Wu et al.

Summary: Research shows that high northern latitudes are experiencing a surface stilling phenomenon with climate change, where the decline in winds is significantly associated with extended autumn leaf senescence, potentially playing a role comparable to temperature and precipitation effects in contributing to autumn phenology trends. Furthermore, the decrease in winds leads to reduced evapotranspiration, less soil water losses, and more favorable growth conditions in late autumn. Reduced winds also result in less leaf abscission damage, delaying leaf senescence, and less frost damage due to decreased cooling effects.
