An Alternative Sucker Management Method in Hazelnut: Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer Solution

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of nitrogen solution for hazelnut sucker management. The study was conducted in two hazelnut orchards and found that a 10% dose of 21% ammonium sulphate fertilizer yielded the best results. Nitrogen solution application should start 1 to 1.5 months after suckers have been removed and before they become lignified. To effectively manage suckers, nitrogen solution should be applied at least three times a year.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different rootstocks on the growth and fruit quality of the hazelnut cultivar Negret. The results showed that the Dundee rootstock had a significant positive impact on the vigor and yield of the hazelnut trees, as well as improved the quality of the kernels.

Advances in Nursery Production of Hazelnut Plants in Serbia - Successful Grafting of Different Corylus avellana L. Cultivars and Clones Onto Corylus colurna L. Rootstock

Summary: The research conducted in Serbia on grafting hazelnut plants onto Turkish filbert rootstocks found that Italian hazelnut cultivars and clones had excellent grafting success rates, with clones showing higher success rates and better consistency compared to main cultivars. The AD17 clone achieved the highest grafting success rate over the two-year study period, with 80% of the grafted plants being of Class I.

Mechanical pruning of European hazelnut: effects on yield and quality and potential to exploit its by-product

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of two different mechanical pruning treatments on the yield and nut quality of European hazelnuts. It was found that mechanical pruning significantly increased the nut traits, while the intensity of pruning had only a slight influence on the cumulative yield. The study also suggested the potential use of the biomass leftover from pruning for energy purposes.

Advances in Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) Rootstocks Worldwide

Summary: Research on hazelnut rootstocks is limited, but using non-suckering rootstocks can increase orchard cost-effectiveness by reducing pruning needs, facilitating mechanical harvesting, and lowering management costs and environmental impact. Trials in different countries have shown good performance of grafted hazelnuts, leading to increased interest in these cultivar/rootstock combinations and the expectation of more new orchards being planted in the near future.
