Burning questions for a warming and changing world: 15 unknowns in plant abiotic stress

Paul E. Verslues et al.

Summary: This article presents unresolved questions in plant abiotic stress biology from 15 research groups. These questions include understanding how plants detect water availability, temperature, salinity, and rising CO2 levels, as well as the interaction between environmental and endogenous signaling and development, and the control of downstream responses. Adaptation to changing environments involves tradeoffs that limit ecological distribution and crop resilience. Exploring plant diversity can help identify fundamental limits and new trait combinations.

Mild water and salt stress improve water use efficiency by decreasing stomatal conductance via osmotic adjustment in field maize

Qi Liao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that mild water and salt stress can enhance the water use efficiency of maize by affecting leaf osmotic adjustment and hydraulic resistance to reduce stomatal conductance and lower net photosynthesis rate. Furthermore, combined water and salt stress can reduce transpiration, stabilize yield, and improve grain water use efficiency by decreasing stomatal conductance, maintaining photosynthetic capacity, and enhancing harvest index, providing a novel approach for efficient water and salt management.

Enhancement of plant growth, acclimatization, salt stress tolerance and verticillium wilt disease resistance using plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) associated with plum trees (Prunus domestica)

Batoul Essalimi et al.

Summary: The study identified bacteria in the rhizosphere of Prunus domestica trees that promote plant growth and protect plants from diseases. These bacteria showed various beneficial traits and can potentially be used in plant breeding processes.

Effects of soil drought and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) on water use efficiency of tomato plants with contrasting endogenous ABA levels

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that lower VPD significantly improved plant water status and water use efficiency, while drought conditions led to a decrease in plant water status and stomatal conductance. The wild type plants showed superior water use efficiency under lower VPD environment. The interaction between soil drought and VPD on water use efficiency was not significant.

Effects of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) Strain Bacillus licheniformis with Biochar Amendment on Potato Growth and Water Use Efficiency under Reduced Irrigation Regime

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to explore the effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and biochar on potato growth and water use efficiency. The results showed that plants were more affected by deficit irrigation than PGPR inoculation and biochar amendment.

Endogenous ABA level modulates the effects of CO2 elevation and soil water deficit on growth, water and nitrogen use efficiencies in barley and tomato plants

Zhenhua Wei et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the endogenous ABA level plays a crucial role in modulating the water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of barley and tomato plants in response to elevated CO2 levels, providing insights into the physiological mechanisms of crop plants adapting to future climate change scenarios.

Partial root-zone drying irrigation increases water-use efficiency of tobacco plants amended with biochar

Xuezhi Liu et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of reduced irrigation and biochar addition on stomatal morphology and gas exchange of tobacco plants. It was found that reduced irrigation, especially alternate partial root-zone drying irrigation, led to lower stomatal conductance and increased water-use efficiency, with biochar having little effect. In addition, stomatal size decreased while density increased under reduced irrigation, particularly with biochar addition.
