Bioactivities and mechanisms of dietary proanthocyanidins on blood pressure lowering: A critical review of in vivo and clinical studies

Wendong Fan et al.

Summary: In this review, the effects of proanthocyanidins on blood pressure reduction and its related mechanisms were summarized. The results showed that proanthocyanidins have a significant antihypertensive effect, effectively preventing hypertension and reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This effect may be attributed to the improvement of vascular function, reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation, and modulation of lipid metabolism.

Proanthocyanidin-enriched cranberry extract induces resilient bacterial community dynamics in a gnotobiotic mouse model

Catherine C. Neto et al.

Summary: Cranberry consumption has health benefits including anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Research suggests that the effects of cranberry on health could be related to its ability to modulate the microbiome, but more studies are needed to investigate the impact, especially regarding PACs. The study on the short-term dynamics of a human-derived bacterial community after a PAC-rich cranberry juice extract intervention showed distinct dynamic patterns in bacterial abundances, indicating that termination of the intervention can induce significant changes in the microbiota.

Use natural deep eutectic solvents as efficient green reagents to extract procyanidins and anthocyanins from cranberry pomace and predictive modeling by RSM and artificial neural networking

Mohammed Alrugaibah et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates that new non-aqueous organic solvents can effectively extract procyanidins and anthocyanins from cranberry pomace, with NDES 2 and NDES 8 showing the highest extraction yields, respectively. Additionally, artificial neural networking is shown to be an alternative or better approach than response surface methodology for predictive modeling in this context.

Procyanidins: From Agro-Industrial Waste to Food as Bioactive Molecules

Leidy Johana Valencia-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Procyanidins are a group of bioactive molecules known for their benefits to human health, especially in the treatment of chronic metabolic diseases. Current research focuses on the extraction of these compounds from agro-industrial wastes, with some techniques coupled with environmentally friendly methods to improve efficiency. Identifying and quantifying these compounds from plant sources is essential for further understanding their biological activities.
