Rice glutamate receptor-like channel OsGLR3.4 modulates the root tropism growth towards amino acids via plasma membrane depolarization and ROS generation

Bo Yu et al.

Summary: Understanding how plants determine root directional growth towards nutrient sources is crucial for optimizing plant growth. This study discovered that a rice Ca2+-permeable channel, OsGLR3.4, specifically modulates root growth and tropism towards glycine (Gly) via Ca2+-mediated electrical activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. OsGLR3.4 was found to be necessary for root nutritropism growth towards Gly by affecting the distribution of membrane depolarization and ROS across the root tip. Additionally, OsGLR3.4 promotes nitrate uptake in roots, indicating its potential roles in crop yield.

Plant glutamate receptors mediate a bet-hedging strategy between regeneration and defense

Marcela Hernandez-Coronado et al.

Summary: This study reveals that plant GLRs play a role in both defense responses and regeneration through dynamic changes in chromatin and transcription. Inhibition of GLR activity increases regeneration efficiency in multiple organ repair systems. This finding provides insights into the trade-off between defense and regeneration in plants.

GLUTAMATE RECEPTOR-like gene OsGLR3.4 is required for plant growth and systemic wound signaling in rice (Oryza sativa)

Bo Yu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the physiological roles of glutamate receptor-like channels (GLRs) in Arabidopsis, but the functions of GLRs in rice are still largely unknown. Knockout of OsGLR3.4 in rice results in growth defects regulated by brassinosteroid (BR) and decreased BR sensitivity. OsGLR3.4 is found to be a Ca2+-permeable channel and plays a crucial role in Ca2+ influx, actin filament organization, vesicle trafficking, and root-to-shoot systemic wound signaling in rice. Additionally, OsGLR3.4-mediated systemic wound response is synergistically regulated by BR signaling, highlighting the importance of OsGLR3.4 in plant growth and responses to mechanical wounding.

Amino acids and their derivatives mediating defense priming and growth tradeoff

Jianghua Cai et al.

Summary: In response to pathogen attacks, plants often sacrifice growth. Defense priming, a widely accepted strategy, enhances resistance at the cost of growth and yield. Amino acids and their derivatives play crucial roles in regulating various aspects of plant growth, development, and stress responses. This review discusses the recent progress in understanding the involvement of amino acids and related molecules in defense priming and their connection with plant growth, highlighting outstanding questions and potential for manipulating the tradeoff between defense and growth in plants.

Integration of electric, calcium, reactive oxygen species and hydraulic signals during rapid systemic signaling in plants

Yosef Fichman et al.

Summary: Plants respond to abiotic stress, mechanical injury, or pathogen invasion by activating systemic signals that propagate throughout the plant, essential for plant survival during stress. These signals, including calcium, electric, reactive oxygen species, and hydraulic signals, regulate systemic processes through vascular bundles. The coordination and hierarchy of these interlinked signals during systemic signaling remain to be determined.
