Transcriptional analysis of heavy metal P1B-ATPases (HMAs) elucidates competitive interaction in metal transport between cadmium and mineral elements in rice plants

Peng Tian et al.

Summary: Cadmium pollution poses a major threat to crop production and quality globally. The study focuses on the interaction between heavy metal P-1B-ATPases (HMAs) and metal transport in rice plants. The results show that there is competition between cadmium and mineral elements in rice tissues during cadmium exposure, affecting the distribution and translocation of these elements.

Speciation of heavy metals in soils and their immobilization at micro-scale interfaces among diverse soil components

Qi Li et al.

Summary: Soil heavy metal pollution is a globally important ecological and environmental problem. Previous studies have explored the pollution sources, adsorption capacity, and distribution of heavy metals, as well as the phyto-uptake and ecotoxicity of heavy metals. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews on heavy metal pollution in soil-plant systems in the past decade. Understanding the mechanisms of interaction between heavy metals and solid soil components is crucial for effectively controlling and remediating heavy metal pollution.

Excess Zinc Supply Reduces Cadmium Uptake and Mitigates Cadmium Toxicity Effects on Chloroplast Structure, Oxidative Stress, and Photosystem II Photochemical Efficiency in Salvia sclarea Plants

Ilektra Sperdouli et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the mitigative role of excess zinc (Zn2+) supply in the uptake, translocation, and toxicity of cadmium (Cd2+) in clary sage. Excess zinc application reduced cadmium uptake and translocation, restored chloroplast structure, and improved photosystem II photochemical efficiency in clary sage plants.

Soil health evaluation approaches along a reclamation consequence in Hangzhou Bay, China

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: Reclamation has been widely used to alleviate land degradation and support increased grain demand. However, the impact of reclamation on soil ecosystem functioning and soil health in coastal wetlands is still uncertain. Through analyzing a chronosequence of reclaimed soils in Hangzhou Bay, China, over a 1000-year period, two key approaches for evaluating soil health were assessed. The findings suggest that even small changes in sensitivity indicators can have significant impacts on improving soil quality.

The assessment of cadmium nitrate effect on morphological and cytogenetic indices of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) seedlings

Dikarev Alexey Vladimirovich et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cadmium on spring barley seedlings, finding that an increase in cadmium dose suppressed growth processes and led to the appearance of morphological anomalies in the seedlings, with the roots being the most affected. Cytogenetic analysis revealed an increase in cytogenetic disorders with higher cadmium concentrations, indicating doses higher than 1 mg mL(-1) as potentially lethal. Different barley cultivars showed varying resistance to cadmium, with the critical dose of 0.35 mg mL(-1) identified for further research on high-tolerance cultivars.
