Microalgae cross-fertilization: short-term effects of Galdieria phlegrea extract on growth, photosynthesis and enzyme activity of Chlorella sorokiniana cells

Giovanna Salbitani et al.

Summary: This study tested the positive effects of Galdieria extracts on the growth and physiology of C. sorokiniana microalgae, and found that the addition of G. phlegrea extracts improved the growth and physiological parameters of C. sorokiniana in a short-term experiment.

Light spectral composition affects metabolic response and flowering in non-vernalized Ranunculus asiaticus L.

Petronia Carillo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the photoperiodic light spectrum has an impact on photosynthesis, growth, and flowering of Ranunculus asiaticus L. hybrids, with different responses to different light conditions. Despite variations in plant performance under different lighting treatments, the content of chlorophylls, carotenoids, glucose, and sucrose remained unchanged.

Salinity Duration Differently Modulates Physiological Parameters and Metabolites Profile in Roots of Two Contrasting Barley Genotypes

Emilia Dell'Aversana et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the morphological, physiological and biochemical changes occurring at root level in H. maritimum and the salt sensitive cultivar H. vulgare L. cv. Lamsi under extended salt stress conditions. H. maritimum was able to compartmentalize higher amounts of sodium in the roots, avoiding transferring it to the shoot and impairing photosynthetic metabolism. This root-level strategy allowed the wild species to delay the onset of stress symptoms and enhance survival under transient soil salinity.

Biostimulation as a Means for Optimizing Fruit Phytochemical Content and Functional Quality of Tomato Landraces of the San Marzano Area

Youssef Rouphael et al.

Summary: The study found that plant biostimulation can increase yield and improve fruit quality of traditional tomato germplasm, although it cannot completely alter their morpho-physiological and nutritional characteristics.

Regulated Salinity Eustress in a Floating Hydroponic Module of Sequentially Harvested Lettuce Modulates Phytochemical Constitution, Plant Resilience, and Post-Harvest Nutraceutical Quality

Petronia Carillo et al.

Summary: Mild salinity stress can modulate plant defense systems and phytochemical synthesis in horticultural crops, but the choice of the correct type and dose is crucial to avoid interference with plant growth and productivity. A study on green and red lettuce plants found that first harvests could increase lipophilic antioxidant content at the expense of yield, enhancing plant resilience and nutraceutical quality, while second harvests primarily focused on tissue expansion. Salt treatments did not affect K and Mg ion contents, increased LAA, and only moderately reduced fresh yield, with nitrate content decreasing during the second harvest with NaCl and CaCl2 treatments.
