Endogenous biomarkers reveal diet partitioning among three sympatric species of swallows

Kaelyn H. Bumelis et al.

Summary: Research has found that among three species of swallows breeding sympatrically in southern Ontario, Canada, Barn Swallows provisioned more terrestrial-based prey, Cliff Swallows provisioned an intermediate diet, and Tree Swallows provided the most aquatic-emergent insect diet, indicating potential factors contributing to differential declines of aerial insectivores on the breeding grounds.

Climate change shifts the timing of nutritional flux from aquatic insects

J. Ryan Shipley et al.

Summary: Climate change can lead to mismatches between resource supply and consumer demand, which can have negative effects on fitness. This study found that aquatic insects reach peak biomass earlier in the season than terrestrial insects, and the availability of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) to consumers depends largely on the phenology of aquatic insect emergence. This results in nutritional phenological mismatches for consumers, as highly nutritious aquatic insects cannot be simply replaced by terrestrial insects.

Nutritional consequences of breeding away from riparian habitats in Bank Swallows: new evidence from multiple endogenous markers

Corrine S. Genier et al.

Summary: The Bank Swallow is a threatened species in Canada that primarily breeds in lakeshores and artificial mining pits. Research found that birds in lakeshore areas consumed more aquatic emergent insects, while inland birds consumed more terrestrial prey. Juveniles from lakeshores had higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood plasma.

Use of Fatty Acids From Aquatic Prey Varies With Foraging Strategy

Cornelia W. Twining et al.

Summary: This study investigated how generalist insectivores varied in their reliance on dietary n-3 LC-PUFA from emergent aquatic insects depending on factors such as dietary flexibility and distance from a lake. Results showed that riparian spiders took advantage of aquatic subsidies, while nestling birds relied on terrestrial resources, including PUFA.
