Coupled ecological and management connectivity across administrative boundaries in undeveloped landscapes

Clare E. Aslan et al.

Summary: Human-induced ecological boundaries, or anthropogenic ecotones, may arise where administrative boundaries meet on undeveloped lands. The fragmentation of management units can result in discernible ecological differences and disrupt ecological flows. Cross-boundary collaboration is essential for ecological connectivity, especially in the face of environmental and social change.

Effects of domestic wood collection on tree community structure in a human-dominated seasonally dry tropical forest

Paulo Henrique Santos Goncalves et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of wood collection on tree community structure in a dry tropical forest in Brazil, finding that it has some impact on tree diversity and structure, but not on dominant species. Mitigation strategies for the effects of firewood and fence wood collection include transitioning to liquefied petroleum gas and promoting living fences or reducing the number of stakes.

Quantifying ecological variation across jurisdictional boundaries in a management mosaic landscape

Clare E. Aslan et al.

Summary: The study found ecological differences across jurisdictional boundaries in the Grand Canyon Protected Area-Centered Ecosystem, with grazing and fire being key factors. The greatest differences were observed between US Forest Service wilderness and Bureau of Land Management units, while US Forest Service non-wilderness units and National Park Service units showed intermediate differences.

Effects of forest harvesting and biomass removal on soil carbon and nitrogen: Two complementary meta-analyses

Jason James et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of forest residues and logging slash on forest soil C and N through meta-analysis. The results showed that treatments with removal of logging slash and O horizon contained significantly less carbon and nitrogen, while removal of forest floor (FF) led to the most severe soil C and N losses. Other treatments had smaller effects on soil C and N.
