Balancing sugar recovery and inhibitor generation during energycane processing: Coupling cryogenic grinding with hydrothermal pretreatment at low temperatures

Shraddha Maitra et al.

Summary: This study found that the optimal pretreatment temperature for energycane bagasse is 170 degrees Celsius, with significantly less inhibitor production below this temperature and an exponential increase in total inhibitor production beyond it. Biomass solids loading has a significant effect on inhibitor generation at higher pretreatment temperatures, with concentrations of certain inhibitors increasing more than threefold on doubling the solids loading. Additionally, a novel low-severity approach combining low-temperature hydrothermal pretreatment with cryogenic grinding has been introduced to improve sugar yields while keeping inhibitor concentrations low.

Optimization of activated charcoal detoxification and concentration of chestnut shell hydrolysate for xylitol production

Kubra Eryasar-Orer et al.

Summary: Optimizing detoxification conditions and concentration levels can increase the xylose concentration in chestnut shell hemicellulosic hydrolysate, leading to enhanced xylitol production. Additionally, fortification of the hydrolysate with xylose can result in a threefold increase in maximum xylitol concentration.

A carbon cycle optimization method for fossil and biomass energy utilization

Vasilios Manousiouthakis et al.

Summary: This study proposed an environmental optimization method based on a carbon cycle model to minimize atmospheric CO2 concentration. The optimization results indicate that afforestation is essential to avoid carbon debt, and a gradual transition is more effective than immediate or delayed step changes. Additionally, using biomass instead of fossils cannot fully recover the initial state.

Enhance environmental policy coherence to meet the Sustainable Development Goals

Luca Coscieme et al.

Summary: Ensuring policy coherence across environmental, social, and economic goals is a key challenge for sustainable development. The United Nations SDGs provide a framework to track progress, but the environmental goals are the most complex and least coherent. Improving data availability and prioritizing coherence within and among biodiversity and climate SDGs are highlighted as critical areas for achieving policy coherence in sustainable development.

Lignocellulosic biomass as an optimistic feedstock for the production of biofuels as valuable energy source: Techno-economic analysis, Environmental Impact Analysis, Breakthrough and Perspectives

Preethi et al.

Summary: Lignocellulose biomass is a prevalent and economic substrate for biofuel production, but the presence of refractory components in biomass poses obstacles in enzymatic hydrolysis, which can be improved through advanced pretreatment technology. Suitable pretreatment enhances hydrolysis by converting polymeric substances into monomers, making biomass more accessible for enzymes and enhancing fermentation. Optimization of integrated pretreatment for biofuel production is necessary in terms of economic and environmental aspects to replace fossil fuels.
