Assessment of the potential for phytoremediation of cadmium polluted soils by various crop rotation patterns based on the annual input and output fluxes

Yihao Yang et al.

Summary: Comparing the phytoremediation potential of different oil crop rotations and conventional cropping patterns in cadmium-contaminated soil, it was found that oilseed sunflower-rape and peanut-oilseed rape rotations had higher efficiency in removing cadmium from the soil. This study highlights the importance of selecting suitable crops for remediation of cadmium-contaminated farmland.

Positive effects of applying endophytic bacteria in eggplant-Sedum intercropping system on Cd phytoremediation and vegetable production in cadmium polluted greenhouse

Luyao Ma et al.

Summary: The intercropping of eggplant and hyperaccumulator Sedum has been studied in the remediation of cadmium contaminated soil. The results showed that intercropping had a negative effect on the growth of both crops, but the application of endophytic bacteria alleviated this inhibition. Intercropping increased the cadmium concentration in the edible part of eggplant, while the application of endophytic bacteria reduced the cadmium concentration and promoted cadmium uptake by Sedum. The intercropping treatment also increased the availability of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil.

Diffuse solar radiation and canopy photosynthesis in a changing environment

Maxime Durand et al.

Summary: The amount of sunlight received by plants is influenced by cloudiness and pollution. Changes in cloud cover and aerosol concentrations will impact photosynthesis and terrestrial ecosystem productivity. Research has shown that clouds and aerosols can alter the spectral composition of incoming solar radiation, thus affecting the process of photosynthesis in plants.

Phytoremediation potential of wheat intercropped with different densities of Sedum plumbizincicola in soil contaminated with cadmium and zinc

Jiacheng Zou et al.

Summary: The study found that planting Sedum plumbizincicola in appropriate density can reduce the contents of Cd and Zn in soil, increase the removal rate of Cd and Zn, but excessive planting will inhibit wheat growth. The optimal planting density of Sedum plumbizincicola is 9 seedlings per pot, which can effectively remediate soil while having a moderate impact on wheat growth.

Low Cd-accumulating rice intercropping with Sesbania cannabina L. reduces grain Cd while promoting phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil

Zhiming Kang et al.

Summary: Interplanting low Cd-accumulating rice with Sesbania cannabina can reduce Cd concentration in rice, increase rice yield, enhance the ability of Sesbania cannabina to accumulate Cd, showing promising and cost-effective agricultural practice for safe crop production and phytoremediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soil.

Biochar and effective microorganisms promote Sesbania cannabina growth and soil quality in the coastal saline-alkali soil of the Yellow River Delta, China

Qian Cui et al.

Summary: The combination of biochar and effective microorganisms can effectively promote the growth of Sesbania cannabina in saline-alkali soil, increase soil fertility, and enhance plant nutrient uptake. Simultaneous application of biochar and effective microorganisms can efficiently reduce soil salinity, improve soil quality, and promote plant growth.

IRT1 and ZIP2 were involved in exogenous hydrogen-rich water-reduced cadmium accumulation in Brassica chinensis and Arabidopsis thaliana

Xue Wu et al.

Summary: The study shows that hydrogen-rich water (HRW) plays a positive role in reducing cadmium uptake by the roots of pak choi seedlings, possibly by inhibiting Cd2+ influx and affecting the expression of Cd transporter proteins.

Long-term increased grain yield and soil fertility from intercropping

Xiao-Fei Li et al.

Summary: The study shows that intercropping can increase grain yields and stability, with yield benefits increasing over time. Long-term experiments on soils of differing fertility found that intercropped systems had on average 22% higher grain yields than monocultures and greater year-to-year stability.
