Impacts of agricultural expansion on floodplain water and sediment budgets in the Mekong River

Edward Park et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the impact of agricultural expansion on hydrological patterns in the Cambodian Mekong floodplains. Using field and remote sensing data, the study found changes in water level, sediment concentration, and sediment budget due to agricultural expansion. The study suggests that deforestation and land surface elevation changes caused by agricultural activities are driving factors behind the observed hydrological patterns in the floodplain.

Climate change impacts on rice-based livelihood vulnerability in the lower Vietnamese Mekong Delta: Empirical evidence from Can Tho City and Tra Vinh Province

Dung Duc Tran et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the livelihood vulnerability and adaptive capacity of rice-based farmers in the lower Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) under the impact of climate change and environmental pressures. The study found that both study areas are vulnerable to climate change and environmental pressures, with the coastal province facing greater threats. Farmers have responded to these changes by increasing production inputs and transforming cropping patterns, but their livelihoods remain unsustainable under climate change.

Assessment of occupational exposure to pesticides applied in rice fields in developing countries: a critical review

H. L. Wong et al.

Summary: Rice, a globally significant staple cereal primarily cultivated in developing countries, presents a significant risk of pesticide exposure during production. Existing methods for estimating exposure lack robustness, with only a few studies providing comprehensive results. There is an urgent need for more systematic research to improve exposure estimates for use in health analysis and risk assessment.

Sustainability of rice-based livelihoods in the upper floodplains of Vietnamese Mekong Delta: Prospects and challenges

Dung Duc Tran et al.

Summary: The study points out that the Vietnamese government has started to focus on the long-term sustainability of agriculture, proposing new development directions, but in practice, this shift may be influenced by some farmers' concerns about their traditional planting system and livelihood security.

Identification of a novel function of a component in the jasmonate signaling pathway for intensive pesticide degradation in rice and environment through an epigenetic mechanism

Li Ya Ma et al.

Summary: This study revealed a novel epigenetic mechanism involving OsCOI1a that enhances rice resistance to ATZ toxicity by mediating the degradation of the pesticide. The research demonstrated the causal relationships between DNA demethylation, OsCOI1a expression, and the detoxification and degradation of ATZ in rice and the environment. This work provides insights into a potential approach for metabolic engineering of rice to reduce ATZ levels in crops and the environment.

Evaluating the Impacts of Rice-Based Protection Dykes on Floodwater Dynamics in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta Using Geographical Impact Factor (GIF)

Hoang Thai Duong Vu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the geographical influences of rice-based protection dykes on floodwater regimes along the main rivers in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. By simulating the effects of dyke construction development on floodwater levels under different flood scenarios, a Geographical Impact Factor (GIF) indicator is established to evaluate the impacts of dyke compartments on the floodwater regimes along the main rivers for different floods. The study findings provide useful insights for land use planning, especially in rice intensification and flood management, in the VMD and similar deltas worldwide.
