A New Species of Septuconularia (Hexangulaconulariidae, Cnidaria) from Cambrian Stage 2, South China

Summary: Hexangulaconulariids are extinct medusozoan small shelly fossils that played an important role in the early Cambrian shallow marine platform ecosystems in South China. This study introduces a new species, Septuconularia crassiformis, found in the Yanjiahe Formation in Hubei Province. The new species differs from known species in the shape of the abapical portion and curvature of the adapertural margin. However, the anatomy of the apical portion remains unknown. The study also revises the diagnosis of the genus Septuconularia and summarizes the spatio-temporal distribution of hexangulaconulariids in South China. S. yanjiaheensis may have been better adapted to the shallow platform environment than S. crassiformis.

The microstructural examination of W. crosbyi confirmed its shell composition and provided new information about its soft body structure, supporting its classification as an untorted helcionelloid. The nearly cosmopolitan distribution and occurrence of W. crosbyi across various facies and paleolatitudes suggest its significance in defining the base of Cambrian Stage 2 on a global scale.

A ten-faced hexangulaconulariid from Cambrian Stage 2 of South China

Summary: Hexangulaconulariids are an extinct group of medusozoan polyps from the Cambrian stages 1-2, characterized by a distinct fan-shaped periderm with significant morphological variations. A new genus and species, Decimoconularia isofacialis, has been described with ten faces, suggesting a closer relationship between Decimoconularia and Septuconularia within the hexangulaconulariids.
