Fractal Analysis of Pore Structure Differences Between Shale and Sandstone Based on the Nitrogen Adsorption Method

Sai Xu et al.

Summary: Pore structure is a critical factor influencing the physical properties of oil and gas reservoirs, and it varies greatly with the reservoir rock type. This study analyzed the pore structures of shale and sandstone using low-pressure nitrogen adsorption experiments and fractal theory. The results showed significant differences in pore shape, distribution, specific surface area, and pore size between shale and sandstone. Fractal dimensions were found to be important parameters in characterizing the pore structure. The study highlights the usefulness of fractal theory in characterizing unconventional reservoirs.

Nano-Pore Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Shale Gas Reservoirs: A Case Study of Longmaxi Formation in Southeastern Chongqing, China

Wei-Dong Xie et al.

Summary: The study explores the pore structure and fractal dimensions of shale gas reservoirs in the Longmaxi formation in southeastern Chongqing, China. Various types of pores were identified within the shale, with different levels of complexity and aperture sizes. Fractal dimensions of micropores, mesopores, and macropores were found to be influenced by organic matter content, brittle mineral content, and clay mineral content. These findings are valuable for the exploration and development of shale gas in the region.

Pore structure and heterogeneity of shale gas reservoirs and its effect on gas storage capacity in the Qiongzhusi Formation

Shangbin Chen et al.

Summary: The study of shale gas reservoir physical properties involves fine characterization of pore systems and heterogeneity. Research in the Qiongzhusi Formation about micro-control factors of low productivity remains controversial. The investigation on the influence of mineral compositions on reservoir physical properties and shale heterogeneity showed that pore structures in the shale were mainly wedge-shaped and V-shaped pores with significant heterogeneity, affecting shale gas migration and reservoir identification. Clay mineral content intensified compaction and pore destruction, while brittle minerals could protect pores, depending on their content, mechanical properties, and diagenesis. The poor gas storage capacity in the Qiongzhusi Formation was attributed to compression damage to pores, large microscopic roughness, surface fluctuations, and strong pore structure heterogeneity, resulting in lower productivity.

Techniques used to calculate shale fractal dimensions involve uncertainties and imprecisions that require more careful consideration

David A. Wood

Summary: The surface roughness of shales has a significant impact on the petroleum resources they can store and recover, with the fractal dimension serving as a key indicator of roughness. Gas adsorption experiments and the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill fractal technique are commonly used to derive estimates of the fractal dimension from isotherm data, with different methods yielding varying results, particularly in shales with complex pore-scale distributions.
