Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Antifungal Potential of Synthetic Peptides against Cryptococcus neoformans: Mechanism of Action Studies Reveal Synthetic Peptides Induce Membrane-Pore Formation, DNA Degradation, and Apoptosis

Tawanny K. B. Aguiar et al.

Summary: In this study, synthetic antimicrobial peptides (SAMPs) were found to have antifungal effects on Cryptococcus neoformans. The SAMPs inhibited fungal growth by damaging the cell membrane and inducing DNA degradation. These findings suggest that SAMPs could be potential alternative molecules for controlling C. neoformans growth and treating cryptococcal infection.

Synergistic Antibiofilm Activity between Synthetic Peptides and Ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus

Nilton A. S. Neto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antibiofilm activity of synthetic antimicrobial peptides (SAMPs) in combination with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus. The results demonstrated that certain peptides in combination with ciprofloxacin effectively inhibited biofilm formation and degraded preformed biofilms. These active peptides formed pores in the bacterial cellular membrane, enhancing the antibacterial activity of ciprofloxacin.

Synthetic antimicrobial peptides control Penicillium digitatum infection in orange fruits

Patricia G. Lima et al.

Summary: Fungal contamination is a major cause of food spoilage, with Penicillium digitatum being a key player. Synthetic antimicrobial peptides were found to effectively inhibit the growth of P. digitatum by targeting the fungal membrane and inducing high levels of reactive oxygen species. Three peptides (PepGAT, PepKAA, and Mo-CBP3-PepI) showed promise as potential new food preservatives to control P. digitatum infection in fruits.
