Production of hydroxytyrosol rich extract from Olea europaea leaf with enhanced biological activity using immobilized enzyme reactors

Alexandra V. Chatzikonstantinou et al.

Summary: This study developed and applied immobilized enzyme batch bioreactors for the chemo-enzymatic treatment of aqueous Olea europaea leaf extract. The modified extract showed increased enrichment in hydroxytyrosol and higher antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities compared to the non-modified extract. The biocatalyst demonstrated high hydrolytic stability and achieved high conversion yields of oleuropein during the modification process.

The European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food in 2019-2020

Group Author Only

Summary: Data on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and food are collected annually by EU Member States and jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC. The 2020 monitoring focused on poultry and their meat, while the 2019 monitoring focused on fattening pigs, calves, and their meat. Monitoring included data on Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli isolates, and specific monitoring of ESBL-/AmpC-/carbapenemase-producing E. coli isolates. Some countries also reported data on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Influence of In Vitro Gastric Digestion of Olive Leaf Extracts on Their Bioactive Properties against H. pylori

Marisol Villalva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in chemical composition and bioactive properties of two olive leaf extracts during in vitro gastric digestion, and analyzed their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant capabilities. The results showed that gastric digestion affected the chemical composition and bioactivity of both extracts, with a significant decrease in antioxidant properties for extract E1 and an increase in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity for extract E2. However, both extracts experienced a decrease in antibacterial activity. The pH of gastric digestion had a minor impact on the composition and bioactivity of the extracts.

Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Hydroethanolic Leaf Extracts from Six Mediterranean Olive Cultivars

Vida Simat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phenolic profiles, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of hydroethanolic olive leaf extracts from six Mediterranean olive cultivars. The results showed variations in phenolic levels among the different cultivars, with the Oblica sample having the highest phenolic content and strongest antiradical and reducing activity. Oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and other compounds were detected as the main constituents. While the extracts exhibited relatively high antioxidant activity, they showed weak inhibitory effects against certain bacteria strains.

Pulsed Light Application for Campylobacter Control on Poultry Meat and Its Effect on Colour and Volatile Profile

Esther Baptista et al.

Summary: The application of pulsed light technology on poultry meat can effectively reduce the number of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria and change the color of treated poultry meat. Pulsed light treatment can also decrease the proportion of aldehydes in meat, particularly those associated with chicken-like, chicken skin-like, and sweet odors. Further studies are needed to explore the reduction of Campylobacter with higher energy doses of pulsed light and the impact of volatile compounds on the flavor of treated meat samples during storage.

Comparison of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles of Thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Human and Poultry Samples in Georgia (Caucasus)

Maia Metreveli et al.

Summary: This study investigates the antimicrobial resistance and genetic diversity of Campylobacter spp. isolated from human and poultry samples in Georgia. The study reveals high resistance to tetracycline in C. coli from industrial chicken and low resistance to tetracycline in C. jejuni from clinical isolates. Point mutations in gyrA and tet (O) genes are identified as resistance determinants. The study also highlights the high variability of multi-locus sequence types in Georgian strains. This study provides important data for monitoring antibiotic resistance in Georgia.

Survival and Control of Campylobacter in Poultry Production Environment

Mohammed J. Hakeem et al.

Summary: Campylobacter species are unique Gram-negative, motile bacteria with a small genome that undergo adaptive responses in different environmental stresses. Despite its weaknesses in laboratory settings, Campylobacter demonstrates survival and adaptive capabilities throughout the poultry production chain, presenting challenges in controlling contamination. New intervention strategies are needed to address Campylobacter contamination effectively.

Olive-Leaf Extracts Modulate Inflammation and Oxidative Stress Associated with Human H. pylori Infection

Jose Manuel Silvan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that olive-leaf extracts E1 and E2 significantly reduced inflammatory response and oxidative stress in H. pylori-infected gastric cells, with E1 being more effective as an antibacterial agent and E2 being more effective as an anti-inflammatory agent. Both extracts showed similar potential in decreasing ROS production.
