Expert consensus on dental caries management

Lei Cheng et al.

Summary: Dental caries is a chronic oral disease that poses a significant threat to human health. Despite efforts by dentists and researchers, the prevalence of dental caries remains high. Establishing a clinical difficulty assessment system for caries prevention and management based on diagnosis and classification is crucial. Dentists should conduct oral examinations and create dental records during each visit. Personalized treatment plans, based on caries risk assessment and lesion activity, are necessary to restore oral microecological balance, control caries progression, and restore the structure and function of the affected teeth. Follow-up visits should be conducted based on personalized caries management. This expert consensus focuses on caries risk assessment, treatment difficulty assessment, and dental caries treatment plans, which are essential components of caries management throughout the life cycle.

Diaryl Urea Derivative Molecule Inhibits Cariogenic Streptococcus mutans by Affecting Exopolysaccharide Synthesis, Stress Response, and Nitrogen Metabolism

Ying Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, the novel diaryl urea derivative BPU was found to inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans. Molecular docking analysis and transcriptomic profile showed that BPU affected key enzymes and biological processes, as well as reduced the synthesis of extracellular exopolysaccharide (EPS). The transcriptomic profile also indicated changes in stress response and nitrogen metabolism in S. mutans treated with BPU. These findings suggest that BPU has the potential to serve as an effective anti-caries agent.

Salivary Proteins as Dental Caries Biomarkers: A Systematic Review

Paras Ahmad et al.

Summary: Salivary proteins play an important role in the repair of damaged tissues and the maintenance of oral health. This systematic review aimed to assess the association between caries and salivary proteins by comparing caries-free (CF) and caries-active (CA) individuals. The results showed that the levels of certain salivary proteins were significantly increased in CA patients, while others were significantly increased in CF subjects. However, there were conflicting results regarding the salivary levels of immunoglobulin-A and total proteins among CA and CF subjects. Due to significant heterogeneity among the included studies, no meta-analysis could be performed. Therefore, larger prospective studies are needed to verify the diagnostic value of salivary proteins as biomarkers for caries.
