Global food security post COVID-19: Dearth or dwell in the developing world?

Anupama Panghal et al.

Summary: Today's global food systems are facing various challenges, including food safety risks, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and food fraud, which could lead to instability in food supply and accessibility. Therefore, accelerating investments in developing more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient food systems is crucial in addressing the pandemic and food security crisis.

Contamination of Fresh Produce with Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Associated Risks to Human Health: A Scoping Review

Mahbubur Rahman et al.

Summary: Fresh produce, when consumed raw, can be a potential source of exposure to antimicrobial residues, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of clinical significance. This review examines the presence and abundance of these substances in fresh agricultural products sold in retail markets and consumed raw, as well as the associated health risks in humans. The pathways through which fresh produce becomes contaminated with ARB/ARGs are also explored.

Summary: This study investigated bacterial and pathogen contamination in vegetables from markets and supermarkets in Bangkok, identifying predictors associated with contamination. It highlights the importance of monitoring and surveillance for pathogen contamination in produce to enhance food safety.

Detection and analysis of indicator and pathogenic bacteria in conventional and organic fruits and vegetables sold in retail markets

Jutanat Srisamran et al.

Summary: Produce-associated food-borne outbreaks are becoming increasingly important globally. This study investigated the contamination of retail produce from fresh markets and supermarkets in Bangkok with indicator bacteria and pathogens such as Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli O157:H7, and L. monocytogenes. The study found high concentrations of indicator bacteria, higher in produce from fresh markets and produced using conventional methods. The prevalence of Salmonella contamination was linked to the rainy season, conventional agriculture, sweet basil, and certain storage practices.

Antimicrobial Cocktail Combining Specific Peptide Extracts from Native Probiotic Bacteria Hamper Adulteration of Ready-to-Eat Mango Wedges

Gabriela N. Tenea et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of specific peptide extract combinations from two probiotic bacteria and commercial food additive nisin on artificially inoculated mango wedges, showing that these antimicrobial cocktails were effective in reducing bacterial counts, with particular efficiency in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii.

Microbial Safety of Smoothie Drinks from Fresh Bars Collected in Slovakia

Monika Krahulcova et al.

Summary: Among consumers in Slovakia, smoothies are becoming increasingly popular and their microbiological safety depends on hygiene standards. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were found in at least one fresh bar in the sampled smoothies, with coliform bacteria prevailing, particularly in green smoothies or juices with more vegetable ingredients. The most effective way to decrease bacterial counts in the final product was found to be washing ingredients with a biocide agent containing silver and hydrogen peroxide.
