Curcumin Attenuates Damage to Rooster Spermatozoa Exposed to Selected Uropathogens

Eva Tvrda et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of curcumin and kanamycin on rooster sperm quality in the presence of different bacteria. The results showed that curcumin was more effective than kanamycin in preserving sperm integrity, mitochondrial activity, and preventing ROS overproduction. The findings suggest that curcumin supplementation in poultry semen extenders could be an interesting strategy in managing bacterial contamination.

The Impact of Bacteriocenoses on Sperm Vitality, Immunological and Oxidative Characteristics of Ram Ejaculates: Does the Breed Play a Role?

Eva Tvrda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bacterial contamination of ram semen and its effects on sperm quality. The results show that bacterial load is associated with decreased sperm motility and membrane integrity, increased leukocyte concentration, and oxidative insults to sperm lipids and proteins. The study also reveals positive correlations between bacterial load and inflammatory markers, suggesting an immune response to bacteriospermia. Overall, this research highlights the importance of controlling bacterial contamination in ram semen to maintain sperm quality and fertilization ability.

The Microbiome, an Important Factor That Is Easily Overlooked in Male Infertility

Hefeng Wang et al.

Summary: Male infertility is a global concern, and despite advancements in diagnosis and treatment, the causes of approximately 30% of cases are still unknown. Recent studies suggest that the microbiome may play a crucial role in male infertility, but the mechanisms remain unclear. More high-quality research is needed to establish the relationship between microbes and male infertility, and it is important to raise awareness among infertile men about the potential impact of microbial infection and dysbiosis when seeking fertility assistance.

Poultry Production and Sustainability in Developing Countries under the COVID-19 Crisis: Lessons Learned

Youssef A. Attia et al.

Summary: Poultry farming is an important economic contributor in developing countries, but it has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially due to restrictions on exporting necessary supplies. Coordinated efforts at both private and government levels are needed to provide loans and help farms restore normal production and market operations.

Role of Lactobacillus in Female Infertility Via Modulating Sperm Agglutination and Immobilization

Fenghao Zhang et al.

Summary: Infertility has become a common issue in recent decades, with microbiological factors playing a significant role. Dysbiosis of vaginal microbiota is linked to female infertility, but the impact of normal vaginal microbiota on fertility remains unclear. This review focuses on the bacterial adherence of vaginal Lactobacillus species, hypothesizing its potential influence on host fertility, and also examines the effects of other bacteria, especially Escherichia coli, on ejaculated spermatozoa.

New strategies to prevent and control avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC)

Henrik Christensen et al.

Summary: This review presents the risks associated with APEC and highlights the new strategy for controlling APEC, including limiting vertical transmission, using all-in-all-out production systems, and implementing biosecurity measures. Vaccination and competitive exclusion are important tools, while culling strategies can reduce antibiotic-resistant APEC. Strategies to reduce APEC, including antibiotic-resistant APEC, need to be implemented in the whole production pyramid, starting at the very top.

The Efficiency of Selected Extenders against Bacterial Contamination of Boar Semen in a Swine Breeding Facility in Western Slovakia

Eva Tvrda et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of selected semen extenders in preventing bacterial overgrowth in boar ejaculates stored for 72 hours. While extenders with antibiotics maintained sperm vitality, they did not completely eliminate bacteria from the extended semen. Some bacterial isolates showed resistance to certain antibiotics.
