Efficacy of incorporating silver nanoparticles into maxillofacial silicone against Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and polymicrobial biofilms

Wen Xin Chong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of sub 10-nm AgNPs in maxillofacial silicone against different biofilms. The results showed that AgNPs can reduce microbial colonization, with the 0.1% concentration displaying sustained efficacy and the 0.5% concentration initially effective but gradually decreasing. The effectiveness of AgNPs on mixed species biofilms was inconsistent.

Molecular Methodologies for Improved Polymicrobial Sepsis Diagnosis

Mariam Doualeh et al.

Summary: Polymicrobial sepsis has worse patient outcomes than monomicrobial sepsis. Culture-dependent diagnostic techniques have low sensitivity, leading to missed identification of causative organisms. Culture-independent methods using molecular technologies show promise, but issues such as contamination and interference from host DNA need to be addressed. This review discusses the clinical significance of polymicrobial sepsis and how alternative molecular microbiology methods can be improved to detect polymicrobial infections.

Yong-Guy Kim et al.

Summary: Saw palmetto oil, specifically its main components lauric acid and myristic acid, have shown antibiofilm activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Candida albicans. These fatty acids repressed key genes expression, reduced microbial virulence, and exhibited synergistic antibacterial efficacy when combined with antibiotics.

Neutralizing Staphylococcus aureus Virulence with AZD6389, a Three mAb Combination, Accelerates Closure of a Diabetic Polymicrobial Wound

Christine Tkaczyk et al.

Summary: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a major complication of diabetes and have a complex pathogenesis. This study demonstrates that targeting specific virulence factors of Staphylococcus aureus can accelerate wound closure and promote full skin re-epithelization in a diabetic mouse wound model. This provides potential new avenues for the treatment of DFU.

Potential of Prebiotic D-Tagatose for Prevention of Oral Disease

Shota Mayumi et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown phenotypic and metabolic heterogeneity in related species including Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans, and Streptococcus gordonii. D-tagatose was found to be abundant in the saliva of individuals with good oral hygiene, and it selectively inhibited the growth of oral pathogens S. mutans and S. gordonii while minimally affecting the oral commensal S. oralis. This suggests the potential use of D-tagatose as an oral prebiotic for manipulating the metabolism of targeted oral streptococci.
