Evaluation of a stewardship program of antifungal use at a Brazilian tertiary care hospital

Fabiola Gamarra et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the quality of antifungal prescriptions in a tertiary care hospital and tested the effectiveness of a simple educational activity in improving prescription quality. The results showed that a large proportion of prescriptions were considered inappropriate, but the implementation of a simple educational activity led to an improvement in prescription quality.

Tackling the emerging threat of antifungal resistance to human health

Matthew C. Fisher et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes the important threat of invasive fungal infections to public health and the emergence of antifungal resistance. It discusses the main mechanisms of antifungal resistance and compares them with bacterial resistance to antimicrobial control. The review also explores the research and innovation topics needed to minimize the occurrence and impact of antifungal resistance, including environmental links, surveillance, diagnostics, transmission routes, novel therapeutics, and hotspot mitigation strategies. The need for global efforts to manage existing antifungal drugs and direct future research and development of therapies and interventions is highlighted.

Global Divergence of Antifungal Prescribing Patterns Data From the Global Antimicrobial Resistance, Prescribing, and Efficacy in Neonates and Children Surveys

Laura Ferreras-Antolin et al.

Summary: The global use of antifungal drugs in neonates and children varies significantly between countries of different income groups, with higher proportions in high income countries. Among patients receiving antifungals, those belonging to high-risk groups for IFD were more likely to be treated in high income countries. Antifungal prophylaxis was also more commonly prescribed in high income countries.
