Role of Chrononutrition in the Antihypertensive Effects of Natural Bioactive Compounds

Nestor Ibarz-Blanch et al.

Summary: This study reviews the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation by natural antihypertensive compounds and their efficacy depending on consumption time. While many studies have investigated the impact of food-derived compounds such as phenolic compounds or peptides on blood pressure, only a few have addressed the relevance of time consumption. Therefore, further research is needed to fully understand the interactions along the time-nutrition-hypertension axis.

A review of ultrasound-assisted extraction for plant bioactive compounds: Phenolics, flavonoids, thymols, saponins and proteins

Ida Madiha Yusoff et al.

Summary: Plant bioactive compounds are valuable resources for the development of various products such as food, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Ultrasound-assisted extraction has emerged as a promising method for extracting these compounds due to its high efficiency, low solvent and time consumption, and suitability for thermo-sensitive compounds. This paper reviews recent advancements in ultrasound-assisted extraction, with a focus on the extraction of compounds such as phenolics, flavonoids, thymols, saponins, and proteins. The paper discusses the mechanism and advantages of ultrasound-assisted extraction, as well as the optimization of extraction variables and the potential for combining ultrasound technology with other processing techniques to enhance food quality and safety. Overall, ultrasound-assisted extraction is an effective method for recovering bioactive compounds from plant materials and improving food processing.

Pseudocereals: a novel source of biologically active peptides

Diego Morales et al.

Summary: Research interest in underexploited foods has increased in the last two decades, with pseudocereals like quinoa, amaranth, chia, and buckwheat being highlighted for their nutritional value and bioactive compounds. These pseudocereals have been found to possess various health benefits, such as anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic, and antihypertensive properties, leading to a growing importance of these crops. The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of the biological activities of peptides and protein hydrolysates derived from the most extensively studied pseudocereals.

Using differences in abiotic factors between seed origin and common garden sites to predict performance of Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii Pursh)

Renata Poulton Kamakura et al.

Summary: Climate shifts and weather extremes impact seed source selection for reforestation. This study used common gardens of Pacific madrone to model tree performance and found that factors such as seed source ecoregion and length of frost-free period were important for growth and mortality prediction. Abiotic variables were better at explaining growth and mortality than performance metrics like spring leaf flush, highlighting the importance of considering adaptation to climatic variables in seed source selection.

DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF AN ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR CONDENSED TANNIN EXTRACTS OBTAINED FROM THE BARK OF FOUR TREE SPECIES USING HPLC

Faustino Ruiz-Aquino et al.

Summary: In this study, the content of condensed tannins in the bark of four tree species was evaluated using HPLC and FTIR analysis. Arbutus xalapensis and Quercus laurina were identified as important sources of condensed tannins. Infrared spectroscopy revealed that tannins have weaker signals of carbonyl groups and less pronounced bands of hydroxyl groups compared to high purity catechin. The developed extraction method for wood tannins showed satisfactory results.
