The Role of Gut Microbiota Modulation Strategies in Obesity: The Applications and Mechanisms

Lingyue Shan et al.

Summary: Nowadays, obesity is a major global public health problem that is closely related to other cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Research has shown that obesity is strongly influenced by genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and dietary factors, especially the disruption of gut microbiota. This review summarizes the mechanistic studies and potential treatments for obesity, highlighting the anti-obesity effects of food-derived compounds that manipulate gut microbiota. The limitations of bioactive compounds in intestinal absorption are also discussed. Additionally, the potential use of fecal microbiota transplantation as a therapeutic approach to modulate gut microbiota for obesity is explored.

Colors of life: a review on fungal pigments

Haritha Meruvu et al.

Summary: Colorants have diverse applications in cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and other industries. Chemically synthesized colorants are popular due to their low-cost and flexible production, but there is increasing interest in natural and eco-friendly biopigments. Microorganisms, especially fungi, are important producers of stable and low-cost pigments with high yields, making them industrial entities of interest. Fungi, with their adaptive metabolisms and biocatalytic pathways, are paramount sources of natural pigments like carotenoids, melanins, riboflavins, azaphilones, and quinones, with potential applications in various industries.

Cudrania tricuspidata Combined with Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus Modulate Gut Microbiota and Alleviate Obesity-Associated Metabolic Parameters in Obese Mice

Ju Kyoung Oh et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the synbiotic administration of L. rhamnosus 4B15 and C. tricuspidata extract significantly reduced fat mass, serum triglyceride, and ALT levels in obese mice. The treatment also modulated gut microbiota abundance and upregulated metabolic pathways associated with improved metabolic health. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind this synbiotic effect.
