Quantity or quality of fish in a developing country: A hedonic analysis

Afjal Hossain

Summary: This study aims to determine the implicit price of fish quality characteristics in Bangladesh. The findings indicate that consumers are willing to pay a higher price for the taste, size, and eye character of wild fish, while they prefer farmed fish for its freshness and bright color, and dislike swollen abdomen and odor. Additionally, the quantity of fish and the presence of bones influence the price of both types of fish.

Intention to buy organic fish among Danish consumers: Application of the segmentation approach and the theory of planned behaviour

Mausam Budhathoki et al.

Summary: More than half of Danes buy organic food products every week, but the retail sale of organic fish and shellfish does not reflect this. This study analyzes the factors influencing Danish consumers' intention to buy organic fish using the theory of planned behavior and consumer segmentation based on the food related lifestyle instrument. The results show that past experience, perceived barriers, and availability of organic fish are significant predictors of the intention to buy, while attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived price are not significant predictors. Increasing the availability and addressing perceived barriers among consumers could potentially increase the purchasing frequency of organic fish.

Consumers' purchase intention of wild freshwater fish in China from the perspective of ecological protection

Tinggui Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates consumers' purchase intention of wild freshwater fish in the Yangtze River Basin in the context of ecological protection. The results show that subjective norm is the strongest direct determinant of purchase intention, and personal norm, attitude, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control also have significant effects on purchase intention. Personal norm plays a significant mediating role in forming purchase intention.

The role of seafood in sustainable diets

J. Zachary Koehn et al.

Summary: Recent discussions on healthy and sustainable diets often overlook seafood, but this paper examines the environmental costs of sourcing nutrients from seafood, animal-source foods, and plant-based foods. The study finds that certain types of fish and shellfish have low greenhouse gas emissions and should be considered in food systems policymaking for their potential to support a healthy and sustainable diet. However, other aquatic species and production methods have environmental costs as high as land-based meat production.

Persistent and toxic chemical pollutants in fish consumed by Asians in Chicago, United States

An Li et al.

Summary: Seafood consumption is more frequent among Asians compared to other ethnic groups in the U.S., but there is little information about how culturally specific fish consumption contributes to exposure to toxicants. This study surveyed fish consumption among Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities in Chicago and analyzed 103 seafood samples for mercury and organic chemicals. The research found that certain types of fish, such as bluefish, pike, and tuna steak, had high mercury levels, while octopus, shrimp, and tilapia were the least contaminated. Omega-3 fatty acids were more associated with organic contaminants than mercury. Consumption limitations were identified for seven types of fish based on risk assessment.

Aquaculture: The missing contributor in the food security agenda

Taryn Garlock et al.

Summary: Aquaculture's increasing contribution to global aquatic food supply is often overlooked due to discussions surrounding sustainability and international trade. However, a study found a positive association between aquaculture production and per capita consumption of aquatic food at the national level, indicating that a 1% increase in domestic aquaculture production is associated with a 0.9% increase in per capita consumption. These findings confirm that as domestic aquaculture expands, there is an increase in the consumption of aquatic food among the poor. This highlights the importance of advancing aquaculture development in regions with high malnutrition and food insecurity rates for global food security.
