Influence of oyster genetic background on levels of human-pathogenic Vibrio spp.

Corinne Audemard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the wide range of concentrations of human-pathogenic Vibrio bacteria in oysters. The results suggest that oyster genetics and parasitism may affect the presence of Vibrio bacteria. The study highlights the importance of further investigating the influence of oyster genetic background and the multiple interacting factors driving the dynamics of human-pathogenic Vibrio bacteria in oysters.

Pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus Increase in Intertidal-Farmed Oysters in the Mid-Atlantic Region, but Only at Low Tide

Tal Ben-Horin et al.

Summary: The study found that intertidal aquaculture may slightly increase the concentrations of Vibrio parahaemolyticus associated with seafood-related gastroenteritis during low tide exposure, but there were no significant differences in Vibrio concentrations and pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus concentrations between intertidal and subtidal-cultured oysters during high tide.

Impact of parasitism on levels of human-pathogenic Vibrio species in eastern oysters

Lydia M. Bienlien et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalent parasite P. marinus had little influence on human-pathogenic Vibrio species levels in eastern oysters, but the less common parasite, H. nelsoni, may impact V. vulnificus levels, highlighting the potential nuances of within-oyster dynamics of Vibrio species.

Effects of changing temperature phenology on the abundance of a critically endangered baleen whale

Laura C. Ganley et al.

Summary: Incorporating the effects of climate change in species management strategies is a major conservation challenge. This study used structural equation models to investigate the cascading effects of climate change and basin-scale variables on the local abundance of critically endangered North Atlantic right whales in a feeding habitat. The findings suggest that the effects of climate change on whale abundance cascade through a network of variables, making it challenging to predict and requiring a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying species distributions.
