Bioactive compounds extracted by liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide from citrus peels

Raffaele Romano et al.

Summary: This work studied the extraction of bioactive compounds from citrus peels using environmentally friendly solvent CO2 under liquid and supercritical conditions. The addition of ethanol as a cosolvent was also investigated. The results showed that the extraction using a mixture of liquid CO2 and ethanol had the highest yield and antiradical activity.

Ultraviolet-B Irradiation Increases Antioxidant Capacity of Pakchoi (Brassica rapa L.) by Inducing Flavonoid Biosynthesis

Juan Hao et al.

Summary: This study assessed the possibility of enhancing the antioxidant capacity in pakchoi by UV-B supplementation. The results showed that UV-B treatment significantly increased the accumulation of antioxidants, including total polyphenols and flavonoids, without affecting the plant biomass. The study also found that UV-B treatment upregulated the activities of enzymes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and the expression levels of flavonoid biosynthesis genes.

Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Activity of Isorhamnetin and Its Derivatives Isolated from Sea Buckthorn Berries, Measured in Whole Blood

Anna Stochmal et al.

Summary: Blood platelets are crucial in maintaining blood flow, but excessive activation can lead to thrombus formation and atherosclerotic diseases. Phenolic compounds, including isorhamnetin and its derivatives, have been found to have antiplatelet and anticoagulant properties, potentially playing a role in cardiovascular disease prevention and therapy. This study examined the biological activity of these compounds isolated from sea buckthorn fruit on human blood platelets in vitro. Results showed that these compounds have antiplatelet potential, especially compound 2, but further research is needed to understand their mechanism.

Recovery of bioactive compounds from walnut (Juglans regia L.) green husk by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction

Raffaele Romano et al.

Summary: This study investigated the extraction of bioactive compounds from Juglans regia L. green husk using supercritical carbon dioxide and compared it to traditional extraction techniques. The results showed that the extracts obtained with supercritical CO2 had high levels of polyphenols and juglone, as well as strong antioxidant and antifungal activity.

Optical Characteristics of Greenhouse Plastic Films Affect Yield and Some Quality Traits of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) Subjected to Different Nitrogen Doses

Ida Di Mola et al.

Summary: The study found that using Film B can increase spinach yield and chlorophyll content, while decreasing ascorbic acid content. Additionally, both nitrogen dose and greenhouse films significantly increased nitrate content, but remained within the legal limit set by the European Commission.
