Analysis of the binding selectivity and inhibiting mechanism of chlorogenic acid isomers and their interaction with grass carp endogenous lipase using multi-spectroscopic, inhibition kinetics and modeling methods

Zeru Xu et al.

Summary: Polyphenols, specifically chlorogenic acid isomers, have inhibitory effects on lipase. The study found that neochlorogenic acid had better inhibitory effect than cryptochlorogenic acid, and electrostatic interaction force played a major role in the lipase-cryptochlorogenic acid system. Molecular dynamics studies showed that neochlorogenic acid had a greater impact on the lipase structure.

Exploring the Extraction Methods of Phenolic Compounds in Daylily (Hemerocallis citrina Baroni) and Its Antioxidant Activity

Zhilin Hao et al.

Summary: Daylily is a valuable plant resource with various health benefits. In this study, four extraction methods were compared for their effectiveness in extracting phenolic compounds from daylily. The ultrasonic-assisted ethanol extraction method showed the highest total phenolic content and the best antioxidant activity. A total of 26 phenolic compounds were identified, with the ultrasonic-assisted ethanol extract showing a higher abundance of phenolic compounds. These results provide theoretical support for the extraction of phenolic compounds from daylily and its application as a functional food.

HPLC-PDA-ESI-HRMS-Based Profiling of Secondary Metabolites of Rindera graeca Anatomical and Hairy Roots Treated with Drought and Cold Stress

Marcin Robert Naliwajski et al.

Summary: To cope with environmental harmful conditions, plant cells developed adaptive strategies by producing complex secondary metabolites. In this study, the root cultures of Rindera graeca were exposed to abiotic stresses, and the highest number of phytochemicals was found in roots subjected to coldness. Lithospermic B acid was identified as the most abundant compound in all root extracts. Therefore, root cultures of R. graeca can serve as a new and abundant source of lithospermic B acid.

Metabolomic Profiling, Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibition Properties and Molecular Docking Analysis of Antarctic Lichens

Alfredo Torres-Benitez et al.

Summary: This study reports the chemical composition, antioxidant and cholinesterase enzyme inhibitory activity, and molecular docking analysis of three lichen species found in the Antarctic territory. The results show that these species contain different compounds and exhibit high inhibition potential on the cholinesterase enzymes. The study provides evidence for the chemical fingerprint of these lichens and supports further research on their other biological activities and potential for medical research.

Antioxidant, Antiproliferative and Anti-Enzymatic Capacities, Nutritional Analysis and UHPLC-PDA-MS Characterization of Ungurahui Palm Fruits (Oenocarpus bataua Mart) from the Peruvian Amazon

Gabriel Vargas-Arana et al.

Summary: In this study, nine natural populations of ungurahui from the Peruvian Amazon were analyzed for their nutritional and biological activities. UHPLC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 24 compounds with antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibition activities. The differences among populations may be attributed to the different growing conditions of ungurahui. The fruit of the ungurahui palm tree is a good natural source of antioxidants and dietary fatty acids, which can be used for the prevention of neurodegenerative or related non-chronic transmittable diseases.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
