Evasion of plant immunity by microbial pathogens

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Plant pathogens utilize various strategies to evade plant immunity, hindering the effective use of host genetic resistance for disease control. This Review discusses current knowledge on how microbial pathogens successfully infect plants by evading their immune responses and explores the potential for engineering crop resistance based on this knowledge.

Secreted Glycoside Hydrolase Proteins as Effectors and Invasion Patterns of Plant-Associated Fungi and Oomycetes

Ellie L. Bradley et al.

Summary: Plant-associated fungi and oomycetes secrete a collection of glycoside hydrolases (GHs) during host colonization, which play critical roles in plant-microbe interactions. These enzymes have diverse functions, acting as both virulence factors and activators of the plant immune system.

Elucidating potential effectors, pathogenicity and virulence factors expressed by the phytopathogenic fungus Thecaphora frezii through analysis of its transcriptome

Nestor W. Soria et al.

Summary: By analyzing the transcriptome and conducting bioinformatic research, potential effectors and pathogenicity/virulence factors of Thecaphora frezii were identified. Candidate effectors showed higher expression levels during the infective stage of the fungus, and the number of virulence factors secreted differed between Ustilago maydis and Thecaphora frezii. Future functional studies can be carried out to validate the function of these proteins when the genome of the fungus is known.

Profiling the secretomes of Penicillium expansum reveals that a serine carboxypeptidase (PeSCP) is required for the fungal virulence on apple fruit

Jiaqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers found that the effector protein PeSCP secreted by Penicillium expansum plays an important role in the virulence of the fungus on apple fruit. Deletion of the PeSCP gene resulted in reduced conidiation, germination, and affected fungal growth and morphology. The knockout also led to altered tolerance to environmental stresses and greatly reduced virulence of P. expansum on apple fruit.

A conserved enzyme of smut fungi facilitates cell-to-cell extension in the plant bundle sheath

Bilal Oekmen et al.

Summary: The corn smut effector Erc1 has 1,3-beta-glucanase activity and promotes virulence in maize leaves by attenuating beta-glucan-induced defense responses. Smut fungi secrete effector proteins that suppress host plant immunity and modulate cellular functions and development of the host.

Cellular uptake of chitosan and its role in antifungal action against Penicillium expansum

Yemei Sun et al.

Summary: Chitosan treatment affected the transcriptome and physiological pathways of Penicillium expansum, with up-regulation of the gene encoding clathrin adaptor protein mu-subunit (PeCAM) involved in clathrin-dependent endocytosis. Deletion of PeCAM resulted in morphological changes in fungal cells and reduced sensitivity to chitosan, indicating that chitosan uptake is mediated by clathrin-dependent endocytosis and plays a crucial role in its antifungal activity.

Isolation and characterization of a Pseudomonas poae JSU-Y1 with patulin degradation ability and biocontrol potential against Penicillium expansum

Yun Ren et al.

Summary: A bacterial strain, Pseudomonas poae JSU-Y1, was selectively isolated and shown to have the capability of degrading patulin. This isolated bacterium could efficiently remove patulin in liquid medium and apple juice, while also inhibiting the growth of Penicillium expansum. The experiment results suggest that Pseudomonas poae JSU-Y1 could be a promising bacterial resource for controlling patulin contamination and toxigenic fungal growth in agricultural products.
