Artificial simulated saliva, gastric and intestinal digestion and fermentation in vitro by human gut microbiota of intrapolysaccharide from Paecilomyces cicadae TJJ1213

Juanjuan Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the in vitro digestion and fermentation of two intra-polysaccharide fractions (IPS1 and IPS2) from Paecilomyces cicadae TJJ1213. The results showed that the constituent monosaccharides of IPS1 and IPS2 remained unchanged after simulated digestion, but they could be utilized by gut microbiota and increase the level of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Furthermore, the analysis of fermentation samples revealed that IPS1 and IPS2 promoted the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and modulated the overall structure of gut microbiota.

Recent advances in the therapeutic application of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): An updated review

Abdur Rauf et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays an important role in regulating metabolic functionalities in humans, with SCFAs receiving particular attention for their pharmacological and physiological characteristics. Research on the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between SCFAs, diet, gut microbiota, and host energy metabolism is still needed. Recent biotechnological advances have shown the potential of using SCFAs as important metabolites to treat diseases and maintain colon health.

Comprehensive analysis of Sparassis crispa polysaccharide characteristics during the in vitro digestion and fermentation model

Wenyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The polysaccharide SCP-1 from Sparassis crispa was found to be resistant to degradation in the simulated gastrointestinal tract, but was consumed by human intestinal microbiota. This consumption resulted in the promotion of beneficial bacteria and inhibition of harmful bacteria, leading to changes in the gut microbiota composition. Additionally, SCP-1 significantly increased carbohydrate, energy, and amino acid metabolism.

Sulforaphane and Its Bifunctional Analogs: Synthesis and Biological Activity

Lukasz Janczewski

Summary: Consumption of cruciferous plants can reduce the risk of lung, breast, and prostate cancers due to the presence of glucosinolates, which can be transformed into biologically active isothiocyanates. These isothiocyanates exhibit anticancer and antibacterial activity and are used in organic synthesis. This review discusses the synthesis of sulforaphane and its analogues, as well as their biological activity. The mechanisms of action for anticancer and antibacterial effects are also explored.

In vitro digestion and fecal fermentation behaviors of polysaccharides from Ziziphus Jujuba cv. Pozao and its interaction with human gut microbiota

Xue Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in structural properties of Ziziphus Jujuba cv. Pozao polysaccharide (JPS) during in vitro digestion and fermentation, and its effects on gut microbiota. The results showed that digestion caused a decrease in reducing sugar content and a slight increase in molecular weight. During gut microbial fermentation, the reducing sugar content initially increased and then decreased, while carbohydrate residue decreased with the release of monosaccharides. The fermentation also resulted in changes in gut microbiota composition and metabolic pathways. These findings suggest that JPS is indigestible but plays a crucial role in regulating gut microbiota and metabolic functions.

Oral administration of Blautia wexlerae ameliorates obesity and type 2 diabetes via metabolic remodeling of the gut microbiota

Koji Hosomi et al.

Summary: The study shows that Blautia wexlerae is inversely associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus and administration of B. wexlerae to mice decreases both high-fat diet-induced obesity and diabetes via modulating gut microbial metabolism. These findings reveal unique regulatory pathways of host and microbial metabolism that may provide novel strategies in preventive and therapeutic approaches for metabolic disorders.
