Histopathological evaluation of bivalves from the southwest coast of India as an indicator of environmental quality

Aswathy Joshy et al.

Summary: Bivalve molluscs are excellent bioindicators of environmental pollution. This study evaluated histological alterations in the digestive gland and gills of three bivalve species in ecologically sensitive regions of India. Prominent tissue alterations were observed, including tubular vacuolation, haemocytic infiltration, parasitosis, lamellar disorganization, and presence of prokaryotic inclusions. The study also assessed the presence of ten trace metals in the digestive gland. Seasonal and regional variations in histopathological indices were observed, with the highest indices observed during post-monsoon. The highest indices for all reaction patterns were found in bivalves from Vembanad Lake, followed by Periyar River.

Use of quantitative real-time PCR to select reference genes in the testis and ovary of Apostichopus japonicus during the breeding period

Shuangyan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study selected ten reference genes (RGs) for sea cucumber gonadal development and identified the most stable genes using quantitative real-time PCR analysis. The results showed that EF1 beta and Grb2 were the most stable combination for all gonad samples, while UBQ and RPS4 were the most stable combination for the testes. These findings provide valuable information for further studies on the molecular mechanisms of sea cucumber gonadal development.

Inflammasomes-New Contributors to Blood Diseases

Jaromir Tomasik et al.

Summary: Inflammasomes are intracellular complexes that play an important role in promoting inflammatory responses and have been associated with various diseases. Recent studies have focused on their contribution to hematological diseases, with specific inflammasomes being linked to different types of blood cancers. Gene variants of inflammasomes have also been linked to disease susceptibility. Although the understanding of inflammasomes is still incomplete, the available results provide a valuable basis for clinical applications and potential breakthroughs in innovative treatments.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in surface sediments off the Dongying coast, Bohai Sea

Zhen Wu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations and pollution status of heavy metals in 214 surface sediment samples collected from the offshore area of the Dongying coast. The highest concentrations of copper and chromium were found in the northeast areas and the Xiaoqing River estuary, while lead, zinc, cadmium, and arsenic were generally higher in the offshore area. Principal component analysis indicated that copper, lead, zinc, and chromium were from natural sources, whereas cadmium and arsenic were derived from anthropogenic sources.

Plastic-Associated Microbial Communities in Aquaculture Areas

Mohamed Mohsen et al.

Summary: In this study, the composition of microorganisms on floating plastics used in aquaculture was investigated. It was found that the plastic surfaces were colonized by diverse microbial communities, primarily diatoms and bacteria, with a higher abundance in open aquaculture areas. Bacterial communities on plastics were dominated by Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria.

Potential mechanisms of some selected heavy metals in the induction of inflammation and autoimmunity

Abubakar U. Anka et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of heavy metal exposure on inflammatory responses and autoimmunity. Chronic inflammation can lead to excessive activation of immune cells and sustained release of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, resulting in autoimmune diseases. Heavy metal exposure may accelerate the development of autoimmunity by triggering inflammatory responses.

Jacky Bhagat et al.

Summary: This review provides the current state of knowledge on the toxicological interaction of microplastics/nanoplastics with other environmental contaminants, focusing on the types of interactions and the depth of mechanistic understanding. It points out the lack of research in certain areas related to heavy metals and chemicals. Recommendations are made for considering environmental factors in future studies.

Marine mammals and microplastics: A systematic review and call for standardisation

Summary: Microplastics receive increasing attention due to concerns about their impact on the environment and human health. Marine mammals, as indicators of marine ecosystem health, may be vulnerable to microplastic exposure. Studies have found microplastics in marine mammal tissues and feces, but methodological and reporting deficiencies make comparisons and extrapolations difficult.

Microplastics in different tissues of wild crabs at three important fishing grounds in China

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that crabs in important fishing grounds in China are commonly contaminated with microplastics, with abundance increasing with decreasing particle size. The microplastics are mainly in the form of fibers, black-gray and blue-green in color, and primarily composed of cellophane. Microplastics are mainly distributed in the gills and guts of crabs, while not detected in muscles.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.

Toxic effects on bioaccumulation, hematological parameters, oxidative stress, immune responses and neurotoxicity in fish exposed to microplastics: A review

Jun-Hwan Kim et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics in aquatic environments leads to bioaccumulation in fish, affecting hematological properties, changing blood physiology, inducing imbalance in reactive oxygen species production and antioxidant capacity, causing oxidative damage, impacting immune responses, and causing neurotoxicity. This study examined various indicators of microplastic toxicity in fish to facilitate the identification of biomarkers following exposure.

Microplastics in seawater and zooplankton: A case study from Terengganu estuary and offshore waters, Malaysia

Zakaria Daoud Taha et al.

Summary: The study reveals the widespread presence of microplastics in surface waters and the potential ingestion by zooplankton in the Terengganu Estuary to offshore waters in Malaysia. Fibres are the most common type of microplastic, with the highest density found in the estuary. Despite the increase in plastic pollution from anthropogenic activities, no significant correlation was observed between microplastic ingestion by zooplankton and microplastic concentration in the surface water in both areas.
