Spatiotemporal dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria contributing to nitrification in sediments from Bohai Sea and South Yellow Sea, China

Mingyue Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the spatiotemporal dynamics of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) and their contribution to nitrification were investigated in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The results showed that AOA had a greater contribution to nitrification than AOB in coastal sediments, and both seasons and sea areas had significant effects on the abundance and potential nitrification rate of AOA and AOB.

Bait input altered microbial community structure and increased greenhouse gases production in coastal wetland sediment

Genmei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bait input on sediment microbial community, greenhouse gas (GHG) production, and physicochemical properties. The results showed that bait input significantly affected dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and various sediment properties. Additionally, bait input led to changes in microbial community composition and increased GHG production. These findings highlight the importance of coastal aquaculture in global GHG emissions.

Diversity and Abundance of Denitrifying Bacteria in the Sediment of a Eutrophic Estuary

Hongxia Ming et al.

Summary: The relationships between denitrifying microbial communities and their controlling factors are largely unknown in eutrophic estuaries sediment. This study in the Liaohe Estuary showed that nirS-type denitrifiers were consistently more abundant and diverse than nirK and nosZ-type denitrifiers, likely playing a key role in nitrogen removal, especially at nearshore stations. The main factors affecting denitrification were salinity, nitrogen levels, and sediment grain size. These results provide valuable information about denitrifying microbiota dynamics in marine sediments.

Nitrogen cycling processes in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary: Spatial variations, controlling factors, and environmental implications

Fangjuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial nitrogen cycling processes in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary, revealing higher rates and gene abundance in the outer estuary. Denitrification was found to be the dominant pathway contributing to nitrate reduction in the study area, suggesting the sediment's significant role in mitigating and controlling nitrogen pollution. The study also highlights the complexity of nitrogen cycling processes in controlling the N budget in the Pearl River Estuary and improving the understanding of these processes in estuarine and coastal ecosystems.

Competition for electrons favours N2O reduction in denitrifying Bradyrhizobium isolates

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: Bradyrhizobia are common N-2-fixing symbionts in soil microbiomes, with some strains showing a preference for N2O reduction over NO3- reduction, possibly due to competition between electron pathways.

Variations in nitrogen removal rates and microbial communities over sediment depth in Daya Bay, China

Jiapeng Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure and function of denitrifiers and anammox bacteria in coastal sediment cores collected from Daya Bay in winter and summer, revealing depth-related variations in their activities and abundances. While denitrifiers showed higher activities and abundances in surface sediments, anammox bacteria became more dominant in subsurface sediments. The availability of electronic acceptors strongly influenced nitrogen loss activities in subsurface sediments, highlighting their role as a sink for buried nitrogen.

Uncovering multi-faceted taxonomic and functional diversity of soil bacteriomes in tropical Southeast Asian countries

Somsak Likhitrattanapisal et al.

Summary: Environmental microbiomes contain vast biodiversity and genetic information with potential for industrial and agricultural applications. Understanding the relationship between microbiomes and environmental factors is crucial for practical uses of this information. This study used Southeast Asian soil bacteriomes as models to assess variation in taxonomic and functional diversity, revealing differences in soil bacteriomes across geographic locations and soil characteristics.

Fixed nitrogen removal mechanisms associated with sulfur cycling in tropical wetlands

Qingkun Wang et al.

Summary: The study sheds light on the significance of anammox activity and its association with sulfide-driven dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in tropical wetlands. Microbial community analysis revealed a diverse array of anammox bacteria, and correlation analysis suggested potential syntrophic interactions among sulfate-reducing, sulfide-driven DNRA, and anammox bacterial populations.

Metagenomic insights into mixotrophic denitrification facilitated nitrogen removal in a full-scale A2/O wastewater treatment plant

Shulei Liu et al.

Summary: This study reported mixotrophic denitrification in a full-scale A2/O WWTP with relatively high sulfate in the inlet, revealing the importance of internal sulfur cycle and autotrophic sulfur-oxidizing denitrifiers in nitrogen removal process. The results highlight the potential of sulfur-based denitrification to overcome carbon sources shortage and sulfur inhibition in WWTPs, providing a more flexible and adaptable nitrogen removal strategy.
