Bi-Directional Energy Cascades in the Pacific Ocean From Equator to Subarctic Gyre

Bo Qiu et al.

Summary: Understanding the transfer of energy in ocean circulation across different lengthscales is crucial for comprehending its equilibrium and variability. Recent advancements in high-resolution numerical simulations have enhanced our understanding of kinetic energy cascades, although observational evidence remains limited. This study uses repeat ship-board velocity measurements to demonstrate the presence of balanced and unbalanced oceanic motions and their contribution to the directional energy cascades, influencing the length scale separating the cascades.

How a Small Reef in the Kuroshio Cultivates the Ocean

D. Hasegawa et al.

Summary: The study quantified vertical nitrate fluxes associated with turbulent mixing and upwelling around a small reef in the Kuroshio by continuously deploying a turbulence microstructure profiler. The vigorous turbulent mixing led to strong nitrate fluxes and the difference in density profiles between upstream and downstream indicated a strong upwelling velocity and nitrate flux in the entire subsurface layer.

Oceanic eddy-induced modifications to air-sea heat and CO2 fluxes in the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence

Luciano P. Pezzi et al.

Summary: Sea surface temperature anomalies caused by warm core eddies in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean have a significant impact on modifying the marine atmospheric boundary layer, increasing heat fluxes and wind speeds, and causing the ocean to act as a CO2 source in midlatitudes. The CO2 fluxes are closely related to SST, with higher SST within warm core eddies leading to larger flux magnitudes.

The Kuroshio flowing over seamounts and associated submesoscale flows drive 100-km-wide 100-1000-fold enhancement of turbulence

Takeyoshi Nagai et al.

Summary: Through in-situ turbulence observations and numerical simulations over seamounts in the Tokara Strait, it was found that the Kuroshio generates intense turbulence, forming mixing hotspots, which promote phytoplankton primary production and CO2 uptake.
