Influence of the 2014-2016 marine heatwave on seasonal zooplankton community structure and abundance in the lower Cook Inlet, Alaska

Caitlin A. E. McKinstry et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of zooplankton community in the northern Gulf of Alaska to the 2014-2016 Pacific marine heatwave. The results showed that zooplankton abundance peaked in mid-June and declined into late January. The abundance of large lipid-rich calanoid copepods did not show clear declines during the heatwave, indicating their resilience. Environmental variables had significant effects on the zooplankton community structure, and a phenological shift was observed in 2016.

Ocean warming alters the distributional range, migratory timing, and spatial protections of an apex predator, the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier)

Neil Hammerschlag et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of climate variability and change on the distribution and migratory phenology of the tiger shark. The results showed that the migrations of tiger sharks have extended farther poleward and occurred earlier in the year during periods with anomalously high sea-surface temperatures. Additionally, long-term ocean warming also led to changes in the distribution and timing of shark captures. These findings have implications for fisheries management, human-wildlife conflict, and ecosystem functioning.

Pollock and the Blob: Impacts of a marine heatwave on walleye pollock early life stages

Lauren A. Rogers et al.

Summary: The North Pacific marine heatwave of 2014-2016, also known as The Blob, had negative impacts on the early life stages of walleye pollock in the Gulf of Alaska, including record low levels of larvae, low survival rates, and poor body condition of juvenile pollock. The decline in the 2015 year class of walleye pollock was attributed to multiple mechanisms associated with the anomalous ocean warming, emphasizing the importance of considering complex interactions beyond simple temperature-abundance relationships when predicting species responses to climate warming.

Heatwave-induced synchrony within forage fish portfolio disrupts energy flow to top pelagic predators

Mayumi L. Arimitsu et al.

Summary: During the Pacific marine heatwave of 2014-2016, key forage fish species in the Gulf of Alaska experienced reduced abundance and quality, leading to trophic instability within the system. Despite compensatory changes in age structure, size, growth or energy content of forage fish, none were able to fully mitigate the adverse impacts of the heatwave. Changes in zooplankton communities and the impact on the forage fish community led to disruptions in the normal pelagic food web, causing shifts in distribution, mass mortalities, and reproductive failures among seabirds, marine mammals, and groundfish.

Flexible use of a dynamic energy landscape buffers a marine predator against extreme climate variability

Gemma Carroll et al.

Summary: Animal migrations are influenced by climate variability, with some species facing challenges in adapting to changing environments. For juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna in the California Current, shifting their migration poleward in response to climate changes allowed them to remain in optimal temperature ranges and increase energy intake. Flexible migration strategies can help buffer animals against energetic costs associated with climate variability and change.
