Transformer neural networks for interpretable flood forecasting

Marco Castangia et al.

Summary: Floods are devastating natural hazards that cause numerous deaths and significant damages globally. This study examines the suitability of the Transformer neural network for flood forecasting. By using the past water levels of upstream branches, the goal is to predict the water level of a river one day in advance. The methodology was validated using the severe flood in Southeast Europe in May 2014. The results demonstrate that the Transformer outperforms recurrent neural networks with lower computational costs, achieving lower Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) values and meeting domain standards for acceptable forecasting errors.

A Hybrid Multivariate Deep Learning Network for Multistep Ahead Sea Level Anomaly Forecasting

Guosong Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel hybrid and multivariate deep neural network, called HMnet3, is proposed for sea level anomaly (SLA) forecasting in the South China Sea. The network combines convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) based long short-term memory (LSTM) networks for spatiotemporal sequence forecasting and time series forecasting, respectively. During testing, HMnet3 outperforms state-of-the-art dynamic and statistical forecast models, especially in identifying small-scale eddies.

Prediction Skill of GEFSv12 for Southwest Summer Monsoon Rainfall and Associated Extreme Rainfall Events on Extended Range Scale over India

M. M. Nageswararao et al.

Summary: The Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) and extreme rainfall (ER) events play a vital role in India's agricultural productivity and economy. Accurate forecasting of the monsoon and extreme rainfall is crucial for the country. This study evaluates the prediction skill of the Raw-GEFSv12 and QQ-GEFSv12 models for ISMR and ER events in India. The results show that while the ISMR patterns are similar in both models, Raw-GEFSv12 has a dry bias and overestimates low- to medium-intensity rainfall events compared to the Indian Monsoon Data Assimilation and Analysis (IMDAA). The prediction skill of Raw-GEFSv12 decreases with lead time, but calibration improves the prediction skill for all lead times.

Oceanic mesoscale eddy detection and convolutional neural network complexity

Oliverio J. Santana et al.

Summary: This study utilizes a convolutional neural network to detect eddies in satellite altimetry maps. The design is relatively simple but performs competitively compared to previous deep learning methods. Additionally, the model is less sensitive to temporal variations and can identify eddies that traditional models may miss.
