Microplastics influence physiological processes, growth and reproduction in the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum

Weiwei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that both 5 and 10 μm PS microplastics were ingested and accumulated in various organs of the Manila clam. This led to increased respiration and excretion rates, decreased feeding and absorption efficiency, and ultimately slower growth. The DEB model predicts negative impacts on growth and reproductive potentiality after 200 days of PS microplastic exposure. Transciptomic analysis revealed significant alterations in carbon and protein metabolism pathways in clams exposed to PS microplastics.

Scallop IKK1 Responds to Bacterial and Virus-Related Pathogen Stimulation and Interacts With MyD88 Adaptor of Toll-Like Receptor Pathway Signaling

Lingling Li et al.

Summary: IKK proteins play important roles in the innate immune system of animals. In this study, the CfIKK1 gene was cloned from the Zhikong scallop and its function and signaling were investigated. CfIKK1 was found to respond to pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) challenge and interact with MyD88 protein, forming dimers or oligomers. RNAi experiments confirmed the regulatory relationship between IKK1 and IRF genes in scallops.

Small RNA analysis of Perna viridis after exposure to Prorocentrum lima, a DSP toxins-producing dinoflagellate

Jia-hui Huang et al.

Summary: DSP toxins produced by dinoflagellates have various toxicities to bivalve mollusks, but these may decrease with exposure time and concentration. Small RNA sequencing in mussels exposed to Prorocentrum lima revealed alterations in important miRNAs involved in regulating genes related to cytoskeleton, apoptosis, complement system, and immune response.

Effects of environmentally relevant levels of polyethylene microplastic on Mytilus galloprovincialis (Mollusca: Bivalvia): filtration rate and oxidative stress

Sami Abidli et al.

Summary: The study found that Mediterranean mussels do not accumulate PE-MPs of 40-48 μm size in their tissues, but their filtration rate decreases with increasing concentrations of PE-MPs. Biochemical markers showed that PE-MPs caused oxidative damage at low concentrations and disrupted the antioxidative system at high concentrations. This research demonstrates that PE-MPs have biological effects on marine bivalves at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Ingestion of microplastics and its potential for causing structural alterations and oxidative stress in Indian green mussel Perna viridis- A multiple biomarker approach

Rajkumar L. Vasanthi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of microplastics in sediment and its impact on Perna viridis from Kasimedu, Chennai, India. The results indicated that fibers were the predominant type of microplastics observed, causing significant damage in the gills and digestive diverticula of the green mussels.

Physiological effects of plastic particles on mussels are mediated by food presence

Shixiu Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that food particles can modulate the toxic effects of plastic particles on filter feeding animals, with microplastics affecting energy budget and oxidative responses, exposure way and particle size also impacting enzyme activities.

Negative impacts of realistic doses of spherical and irregular microplastics emerged late during a 42 weeks-long exposure experiment with blue mussels

Thea Hamm et al.

Summary: This study exposed juvenile mussels to environmentally realistic doses of PVC and PS microplastics for 42 weeks, finding minimal negative effects on mussel performance, with lower SOD activity in gills of mussels exposed to PS even at the lowest dose. Growth and CI were not impaired, indicating that these specific microplastics pose only a minor threat to blue mussel populations at current pollution levels.

Microplastics alter digestive enzyme activities in the marine bivalve, Mytilus galloprovincialis

Charlene Trestrail et al.

Summary: The ingestion of microplastics affects the digestive enzyme activities of mussels, with polystyrene reducing certain carbohydrase activities and increasing others. High concentrations of microplastics can lead to a significant increase in total protease activity in mussels. Other digestive enzyme activities, such as laminarinase, lipases, and lipolytic esterases, remain unaffected by the presence of microplastics.

Nanoplastic-Induced Genotoxicity and Intestinal Damage in Freshwater Benthic Clams (Corbicula fluminea): Comparison with Microplastics

Zhenling Li et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics preferentially trigger processes related to cellular components and induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in various tissues, especially in indirectly contacted tissues, while microplastics induce innate immune response and activate complement and coagulation cascades. Both types of plastics can cause inflammation and epithelial damage in the intestines, and notably alter the gut microbial community structure. Unlike microplastics, the impact of nanoplastics on the intestinal microflora is limited, but it can cause more severe damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Transcriptomic Profile of the Cockle Cerastoderma edule Exposed to Seasonal Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxin Contamination

Dany Dominguez-Perez et al.

Summary: In this study, the transcriptomic response of wild cockles from Portugal exposed to DSTs was investigated, revealing differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in two tissues (gills and digestive gland). A total of 1098 DEGs were identified, with 353 exclusive to the digestive gland, 536 unique to the gills, and 209 common DEGs. Known DSTs biomarkers such as glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and cytochrome P450 were among the DEGs identified.

Ingestion and Toxicity of Polystyrene Microplastics in Freshwater Bivalves

Annkatrin Weber et al.

Summary: This study investigated microplastic ingestion by the freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha and found that ingestion is affected by factors such as size, concentration, and food abundance. The mussels can compensate for the toxicity of polystyrene fragments and diatomite, suggesting a potential resilience to elevated concentrations of microplastics.

Comparative evaluation of high-density polyethylene and polystyrene microplastics pollutants: Uptake, elimination and effects in mussel

Qiang Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accumulation, elimination, tissue distribution, and potential effects of HDPE and PS in mussels. The results showed that HDPE and PS were distributed in various tissues, accumulated rapidly, but were mostly cleared after elimination. Additionally, HDPE and PS induced oxidative stress, leading to changes in mussel metabolism profiles.
