An evaluation of information sharing schemes to identify what motivates fishers to share catch information

Julia Calderwood et al.

Summary: Avoiding unwanted catches and reducing discards is an important objective of fisheries management. Fishers can improve selectivity of their fishing operations through technical measures, gear modifications, and adjusting when and where to fish. Real-time information sharing within a fleet can help fishers avoid unwanted catches, but there is often reluctance to share catch information with others.

Projecting species distributions using fishery-dependent data

Melissa A. Karp et al.

Summary: Many marine species are shifting their distributions in response to changing ocean conditions, which poses challenges for fisheries management. Species distribution models (SDMs) are used to project future distributions, but there is concern that fishery-dependent data may bias predictions. Understanding the strengths and limitations of SDMs based on fishery-dependent data is critical due to limited resources for fishery-independent surveys.

Local knowledge, social identity and conflicts around traditional marine salmon fisheries - A case from Mid-Norway

Guri Dyrset et al.

Summary: This article examines the challenges of conserving marine biocultural diversity through a case study of marine salmon fisheries in Norway. It highlights the tight relationship between declining natural resources and the preservation of cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of involving local communities in effective management and governance of multifunctional biocultural landscapes.

A decision support tool for integrated fisheries bycatch management

Eric Gilman et al.

Summary: This study developed a decision tool for integrated bycatch management that categorizes and ranks mitigation methods based on their effectiveness and generalizability. The tool helps stakeholders evaluate different management strategies and their feasibility in meeting bycatch and mortality objectives, considering fishery-specific factors and compliance monitoring. Ongoing adaptation allows for updates and protection for the most vulnerable populations.

Tuning and Development of an Individual-Based Model of the Herring Spawning Migration

Cian Kelly et al.

Summary: This article presents an individual-based model that simulates the spawning migration of Norwegian spring spawning herring and predicts their distribution and abundance in the Norwegian Sea. The model is validated against observation data and coupled with a physical oceanographic model. The model captures the observed characteristics of the spawning migration.

Learning From the Study Fleet: Maintenance of a Large-Scale Reference Fleet for Northeast US Fisheries

Andrew W. Jones et al.

Summary: Logbook data is essential for fisheries management, but traditional logs often lack standardization and detail. The Study Fleet program addresses these issues by collecting high-resolution data through electronic logs, and has achieved success in multiple regions. It is suggested that other similar programs develop detailed roadmaps, collaborate with participants, and engage with data users early on.

Towards a framework for fishing route optimization decision support systems: Review of the state-of-the-art and challenges

Igor Granado et al.

Summary: Route optimization methods provide the fisheries industry with the opportunity to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and safety. Although the use of route optimization DSS is limited in fisheries, a general framework for fishing route optimization DSS is introduced in this work. Different types of fishing fleets can benefit from FRODSS, with the Basque fleet as a case study. Distant-water vessels are currently the most likely to benefit from FRODSS, but other fleets can also benefit through adaptation based on their specific characteristics.

Beyond metiers: social factors influence fisher behaviour

Amanda Schadeberg et al.

Summary: Management of fisheries relies on technical and financial data, yet understanding fisher behavior requires consideration of social factors. Combining quantitative logbook analysis with qualitative data from engaging with fishers provides a more comprehensive understanding of motivations behind fishing activity. Social factors such as business structure, working rhythm, and polyvalence were found to influence fisher behavior in the Dutch demersal fleet, indicating that motivations go beyond regulatory compliance or profit-seeking.
