Summary: This study focuses on the development of Neolithic cultures and rice-based agriculture in the Hangzhou Bay region, and highlights the significance of the mid-to-late Holocene Yangzi Delta evolution in shaping these developments.

Sedimentary records of mid-Holocene coastal flooding at a Neolithic site on the southeast plain of Hangzhou Bay, east China

Jing Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a sediment profile from a Neolithic site on the east China coast, identifying a coastal, tidally influenced fluvial setting formed around 5600 years ago in a stable or falling relative sea level. Two periods of salinity intrusion were identified, with frequent extreme typhoon events occurring during these periods. The reconstructed history of extreme typhoon incursions on the east China coast is distinct from other regions and reflects the complexity of typhoon tracks in response to fluctuating sea level and climate change in the northwest Pacific basin.

Early to mid-Holocene sedimentary evolution on the southeastern coast of Hangzhou Bay, East China, in response to sea-level change

Ye Lyu et al.

Summary: The study examines the sedimentary history of the palaeo-Ningbo Bay in early to mid-Holocene in response to post-glacial sea-level rise using multi-proxy analyses on sediment cores. The results show rapid sediment accumulation before and after specific time periods, as well as changes in sedimentation rates and tidal energy. The development of a thick sediment sequence and the relationship to sea-level changes in the bay suggest the importance of such muddy embayments downdrift of large river mouths in reconstructing the Holocene depositional system.
