Linking Phytoplankton Variability to Atmospheric Blocking in an Eastern Boundary Upwelling System

Chengfeng Le et al.

Summary: Using a 20-year time-series record, this study identified a strong linkage between phytoplankton variability in the eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUS) and a high latitude, large-scale atmospheric process. Blocking events over Greenland caused a weakening of wind-driven upwelling, leading to inhibited phytoplankton growth. These findings underscore the importance of atmospheric connections in coastal upwelling ecosystems.

A Dual-Band Model for the Vertical Distribution of Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) in Stratified Waters

Xiaogang Xing et al.

Summary: A dual-band model is proposed in this study to characterize the vertical distribution of PAR based on chlorophyll concentration, showing its general applicability in various aspects. The model offers an effective module for large-scale ecosystem and/or circulation models for efficient calculations.

Strengthened ocean-desert process in the North Pacific over the past two decades

Siyu Meng et al.

Summary: The study found that the North Pacific ocean desert has experienced oligotrophication and expansion over the past 20 years, which is related to warming upper oceans in most regions, but the Chl-a variations in the southwest area are linked to regional changes in sea surface heights. Additionally, the insignificant shift in the mean position of NPOD is likely controlled by the Pacific decadal oscillation processes.

Mesoscale Energy Balance and Air-Sea Interaction in the Kuroshio Extension: Low-Frequency versus High-Frequency Variability

Haiyuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates mesoscale energetics and air-sea interaction in the Kuroshio Extension region using eddy-resolving CESM simulations. Results show that low-frequency eddy energy generation is influenced by both baroclinic and barotropic pathways, while high-frequency variability is mainly driven by baroclinic instability and regulated by TTW processes.

Seasonal and Daily-Scale Photoacclimation Modulating the Phytoplankton Chlorophyll-Carbon Coupling Relationship in the Mid-Latitude Northwest Pacific

Xiaogang Xing et al.

Summary: Photoacclimation is a photo-physiological mechanism that affects the ratio of phytoplankton chlorophyll and carbon in mid-latitude oceans, influencing the dynamics of chlorophyll and the coupling relationship between chlorophyll and carbon.

Enhanced interactions of Kuroshio Extension with tropical Pacific in a changing climate

Youngji Joh et al.

Summary: Recent observational studies and climate models have confirmed the coupling between the Kuroshio Extension and the Central Pacific El Nino Southern Oscillation, which has intensified in recent decades. However, due to the limited length of records, it is challenging to attribute this shift to anthropogenic factors.
