Understanding the key takeaway of construction robots towards construction automation

Zhu Huang et al.

Summary: The construction industry in China faces challenges such as low productivity and workforce shortage. Despite being an effective approach, construction robots have not been widely adopted in China. This study identified 24 hindering factors, with the most critical being limited research and design input, high purchase cost, and unstructured construction environment. Further research is needed to promote the adoption of construction robots in China.

Change detection for indoor construction progress monitoring based on BIM, point clouds and uncertainties

Theresa Meyer et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for high-resolution change detection in confined building interiors using terrestrial laser scanning and voxel-based spatial discretization. The method allows automatic construction progress documentation and metric evaluation. By modeling the effects of laser range measurements on the occupancy of space and evaluating using evidence theory, the method can verify, update, and confirm the metric accuracy of a BIM.

Multiobjective Optimization of Reality Capture Plans for Computer Vision-Driven Construction Monitoring with Camera-Equipped UAVs

Amir Ibrahim et al.

Summary: The exponential growth in reality capture and BIM-enabled construction workflows has led to the development of computer vision-driven solutions. However, the accuracy and completeness of the reality capture greatly influence their performance. Operational requirements, particularly for camera-equipped UAVs, should also be considered. This paper proposes a novel multiobjective optimization method and presents a client-server system architecture to address these limitations.

Automation of Construction Progress Monitoring by Integrating 3D Point Cloud Data with an IFC-Based BIM Model

Paulius Kavaliauskas et al.

Summary: Automated construction progress monitoring using integrated as-planned building information modeling (BIM) and as-built point cloud data has the potential to accelerate construction work and identify discrepancies. This study proposes a novel method that extracts BIM data, calculates plane equations, and estimates point-to-plane distances to overcome previous limitations in automated object detection.

Automated Computer Vision-Based Construction Progress Monitoring: A Systematic Review

Muhammad Sami Ur Rehman et al.

Summary: This study assesses the level of automation achieved through various methods in computer vision (CV)-based construction project progress monitoring (CPM). It concludes that current CV-based CPM research primarily focuses on resolving the technical feasibility of image-based processing, lacking connectivity to construction management applications. Therefore, there is a need to establish interconnectivity between sub-processes for an effective alternative to traditional practices.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for Physical Progress Monitoring of Construction

Nicolas Jacob-Loyola et al.

Summary: This research proposes a method for recording the actual progress of a construction site through manual operation of UAVs and the use of point clouds obtained under photogrammetric techniques, which is then compared with actual progress in a 4D BIM environment. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method for UAV operation and monitoring actual progress.
