Procalcitonin and secondary bacterial infections in COVID-19: association with disease severity and outcomes

Natale Vazzana et al.

Summary: Elevated PCT levels can identify a subset of COVID-19 patients at increased risk of severe disease and adverse outcomes, but it has low sensitivity and undefined cost-utility ratio.

The role of procalcitonin in predicting risk of mechanical ventilation and mortality among moderate to severe COVID-19 patients

Cher Wei Twe et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the optimal cut-off value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) in predicting important clinical outcomes, such as mechanical ventilation and all-cause mortality, among moderate to severe COVID-19 patients. The results showed that a PCT level of 0.2 ng/mL was associated with an elevated risk in all-cause mortality, the need for non-invasive ventilation, and a longer duration of mechanical ventilation.

Two original observations concerning bacterial infections in COVID-19 patients hospitalized in intensive care units during the first wave of the epidemic in France

Camille d'Humieres et al.

Summary: Among 197 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in ICU, 44.7% experienced bacterial infections, with pneumonia and bloodstream infections being the most frequent. Unusual findings include suspected bacterial translocations from the digestive tract and bacterial persistence in the lungs despite adequate therapy.

Incidence, risk factors and outcome of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with COVID-19

Gaetano Alfano et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) had a incidence rate of 22.4%, with manifestations of proteinuria and microscopic hematuria. Risk factors for kidney injury included age, male sex, CKD, and higher non-renal SOFA score. Some patients required hemodialysis, and 33.3% of survivors did not recover kidney function after AKI.
