B cell-activating factor and its targeted therapy in autoimmune diseases

Yidan Zhang et al.

Summary: B cells play a pivotal role in autoimmune diseases, and B cell-activating factor (BAFF) is key in driving autoreactive B cell response. Increased BAFF levels have been observed in patients with autoimmune diseases and mouse models where autoantibody production is prominent. Recent clinical studies have shown BAFF as a potential therapeutic target for treating autoimmune diseases.

Review: Serum Biomarkers of Lung Fibrosis in Interstitial Pneumonia with Autoimmune Features-What Do We Already Know?

Ewa Miadlikowska et al.

Summary: Interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features (IPAF) is a type of interstitial lung disease with varied prognosis and course. Currently, there is a lack of specific and sensitive biomarkers for predicting disease progression, monitoring natural history, and stratifying patients for treatment. Several studies have focused on circulating biomarkers and assessed their diagnostic and prognostic value in interstitial lung diseases. However, a meta-analysis of pulmonary fibrosis biomarkers in IPAF is still lacking due to the heterogeneity in research methodology and analyzed groups.

Targeted Immunotherapy for Autoimmune Disease

Seung Min Jung et al.

Summary: Biological drugs and small molecule inhibitors have become the standard-of-care for treating autoimmune diseases, but there are still challenges in terms of therapeutic efficacy and safety profiles. Emerging therapies using advanced molecular engineering techniques aim to induce immune tolerance and overcome these challenges.

Summary: This study discusses the different types of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) and their association with autoimmune and connective tissue diseases (CTDs), as well as introduces drug treatment studies for some fibrosing ILDs. It emphasizes the importance of fibrosis in ILDs.

An Update on the Management of Childhood-Onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Vitor Cavalcanti Trindade et al.

Summary: Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a complex autoimmune condition characterized by unpredictable flare and high morbidity and mortality rates. Treatment mainly involves antimalarials and glucocorticoids, with newer options such as biologic agents showing promise for future use in pediatric patients. Additionally, management practices for cSLE patients include regular evaluations, vaccinations, physical activity, and addressing mental health issues.

Belimumab in the Treatment of Connective Tissue Disease-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease: Case Report and Literature Review

John Mwangi et al.

Summary: ILD is a group of heterogeneous parenchymal lung disorders characterized by inflammation, fibrosis, or scarring of the lung's interstitial, which often leads to dyspnea. It is commonly associated with connective tissue diseases and is a serious pulmonary complication with limited therapeutic options, resulting in significant morbidity. Emerging biologic therapies are being investigated for the treatment of various forms of ILD, such as the use of belimumab in cases associated with systemic lupus erythematosus and scleroderma overlap.

The role of lung ultrasound B-lines and serum KL-6 in the screening and follow-up of rheumatoid arthritis patients for an identification of interstitial lung disease: review of the literature, proposal for a preliminary algorithm, and clinical application to cases

Yukai Wang et al.

Summary: Screening and follow-up of interstitial lung disease associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA-ILD) is challenging in clinical practice due to majority of patients being asymptomatic and lack of optimal tools for early screening. Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) is the most frequent radiological and pathological pattern in RA-ILD, indicating poor prognosis and high risk of acute exacerbations and infections. Lung ultrasound (LUS) and serum Krebs von den Lungen-6 antigen (KL-6) have been recognized as sensitive biomarkers for early detection of ILD, showing significant correlation with high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) in systemic sclerosis-associated ILD (SSc-ILD).

The role of ultrasound in systemic sclerosis: On the cutting edge to foster clinical and research advancement

Michael Hughes et al.

Summary: Ultrasound technology has been widely used in the study of systemic sclerosis, providing non-invasive and radiation-free insights into the disease. While offering novel perspectives on disease pathogenesis and measurement, there are still unmet needs that must be addressed for ultrasound to play a more central role in the clinical care and research of systemic sclerosis.
