Effect of hyperoxia and hypoxia on retinal vascular parameters assessed with optical coherence tomography angiography

Nikolaus Hommer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of superficial and deep capillary plexuses to hyperoxia and hypoxia using OCT-A and retinal vessel analyzer. Results showed that hyperoxia led to a decrease in DCP perfusion density, while hypoxia caused an increase in SVP perfusion density. Additionally, systemic oxygen saturation correlated negatively with perfusion density in the SVP and DCP, as well as retinal vessel diameters.

OCT-angiography detects longitudinal microvascular changes in glaucoma: a systematic review

Ana Miguel et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed longitudinal changes in vessel density (VD) in glaucoma using OCTA. The results showed significant differences in VD change rates between glaucoma patients and healthy controls. Variability in VD change after glaucoma surgery highlights the need for further research. Quality improvement and standardization of VD measurement methods are essential for future meta-analyses.

Optical coherence tomography angiography metrics predict normal tension glaucoma progression

Yu Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relationship between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) metrics and visual field (VF) progression in eyes with normal tension glaucoma (NTG). The findings showed that lower superotemporal cpVD measured from OCTA in the peripapillary region improves the prediction of VF deterioration in NTG.

Plexus-specific effect of flicker-light stimulation on the retinal microvasculature assessed with optical coherence tomography angiography

Martin Kallab et al.

Summary: The study investigated stimulus-evoked hemodynamic responses in different microvascular layers of the human retina using optical coherence tomography angiography. Flicker stimulation significantly increased vessel density in the superficial, intermediate, and deep capillary plexus, with the most pronounced effect in the superficial capillary plexus. This highlights the important role of microvasculature in mediating functional hyperemia and suggests a plexus-specific mechanism for meeting cellular metabolic demands.

Vessel Density in the Macular and Peripapillary Areas in Preperimetric Glaucoma to Various Stages of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma in Taiwan

Summary: The study found significant differences in peripapillary VD among different stages of glaucoma, suggesting that peripapillary VD measurements can be helpful in differentiating stages of glaucoma severity, even in patients with myopic glaucoma.

Normative data and standard operating procedures for static and dynamic retinal vessel analysis as biomarker for cardiovascular risk

Lukas Streese et al.

Summary: The study found that with increasing age, central retinal arteriolar and venular diameters as well as venular dilatation capacity significantly decrease; meanwhile, higher blood pressure is associated with narrower arteriolar diameter but increased arteriolar dilatation capacity. It is recommended to use standardized operating procedures and cardiovascular risk stratification based on normative data to enable clinical implementation of retinal vessel analysis in a personalized medicine approach.
