Thiocyanate increases the nitrous oxide formation process through modifying the soil bacterial community

Jian Gao et al.

Summary: The experiment demonstrated that adding thiocyanate (TC) to soil applied with artificial urine increased the N2O-N emissions linearly and quadratically. While TC did not affect soil bacterial diversity and richness, it increased the relative abundances of certain bacteria, potentially enhancing denitrification of nitrifiers in the soil to increase N2O-N emissions. Further field experiments are needed to confirm these laboratory findings.

Efficient nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate in a step feed continuous plug-flow system based on one-stage anammox process

Shang Ren et al.

Summary: A continuous plug-flow multistage anoxic/oxic (A/O) system based on one-stage partial nitrification coupled anammox (PNA) process with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) was established and operated effectively for 400 days. The system demonstrated high removal efficiency for inorganic nitrogen and achieved a significant shift in the dominant anammox bacteria genus during operation. The results and innovative system design hold great value for practical applications.

Performance and bacterial community analysis of a two-stage A/O-MBBR system with multiple chambers for biological nitrogen removal

Xiaolin Zhou et al.

Summary: A two-stage anoxic/oxic-moving bed biofilm reactor system was established for municipal wastewater treatment. The system achieved high removal efficiencies for SCOD, NH4+-N, and TIN during different seasons. Functional bacterial populations were formed in different reactors, and the highest nitrification potential was found in the last oxic reactor of the first stage, while the highest denitrification potential was found in the post-anoxic reactors.

Enhanced simultaneous partial nitrification and denitrification performance of aerobic granular sludge via tapered aeration in sequencing batch reactor for treating low strength and low COD/TN ratio municipal wastewater

Denghui Chen et al.

Summary: The AGS-SPNDPR process showed successful cultivation of aerobic granular sludge for simultaneous partial nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal in low strength and low COD/TN ratio municipal wastewater. The tapered aeration method achieved excellent removal performance of COD and NH4+-N, and higher TN removal efficiency. Additionally, the process allowed for efficient phosphorus removal and enrichment of denitrifying glycogen-accumulating organisms, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and phosphorus-accumulating organisms.

Intensified nitrogen removal by endogenous denitrification in a full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant

Jia Li et al.

Summary: In this study, endogenous denitrification (ED) was enhanced in a practical AAO-AO process for the first time, leading to a significant increase in nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE). The findings suggest a novel cost-and energy-efficient strategy to improve NRE by optimizing the ED process.

Metagenomic insights into microbial nitrogen metabolism in two-stage anoxic/oxic-moving bed biofilm reactor system with multiple chambers for municipal wastewater treatment

Xiaolin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the biofilms of a two-stage A/O-MBBR system using metagenomic sequencing, and found significant differences in microbial populations among different chambers. Ammonia nitrogen removal was positively correlated with Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas, while denitrification was positively correlated with denitrifying genera. Functional biofilms with different microbial nitrogen metabolisms were formed in each chamber.

Recycled utilization of ryegrass litter in constructed wetland coupled microbial fuel cell for carbon-limited wastewater treatment

Zhengkai Tao et al.

Summary: The integration of microbial fuel cell (MFC) and recycled utilization of ryegrass litter planted in constructed wetland (CW) can effectively solve wetland plant litter disposal and improve the nitrogen removal of carbon-limited wastewater. The addition of ryegrass litter significantly increased the nitrogen removal rate and promoted microbial growth and denitrification. In MFC-CW, the introduction of MFC not only increased denitrification, but also accelerated biomass hydrolysis and promoted the enrichment and growth of functional microorganisms.

Short communication Collaborative removal of NOx and toluene in flue gas driven by aerobic denitrifying biotrickling filter

Huaiyong Jiao et al.

Summary: An aerobic Denitrifying BioTrickling Filter (DBTF) was investigated for collaborative removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and toluene in flue gas. The results showed that DBTF had high removal efficiency for both NOx and toluene, and certain bacteria and genes played key roles in the process. This finding opens up new possibilities for applying DBTF to simultaneous removal of NOx and VOCs.

Rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria linked to floc aggregates in a single-stage partial nitritation-anammox process: Providing the initial carrier and anaerobic microenvironment

Jialin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of floc aggregates in the enrichment of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in a partial nitritation-anammox bioreactor. The addition of excess sodium acetate induced the formation of small floc aggregates, providing an initial biological carrier and necessary anaerobic microenvironment for the growth of attached AnAOB. These results suggest that floc aggregates play a crucial role in the enrichment of AnAOB and can be influenced by operational conditions.

Wood and sulfur-based cyclic denitrification filters for treatment of saline wastewaters

Qiaochong He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance and microbiome of cyclic denitrification filters (CDFs) for wood and sulfur heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification (WSHAD) of saline wastewater. The wood-sulfur CDFs achieved high denitrification rates and lower SO42- accumulation. Despite water quality parameters being suitable for marine fish production, lower survival rates of Poecilia sphenops were observed compared with prior studies.

Jannie Munk Kristensen et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in Danish full-scale activated sludge wastewater treatment plants are rich in Acidobacteriota taxa, which show high metabolic diversity and potential involvement in nitrogen and phosphorus removal and iron reduction. Genome annotation and metabolic reconstruction of Acidobacteriota metagenome-assembled genomes reveal their potential to be polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) with intracellular storage of key compounds.
