Achieving high-rate partial nitritation with aerobic granular sludge at low temperatures

Wenru Liu et al.

Summary: This study developed a high-rate partial nitritation process for low-ammonium wastewater treatment at low temperatures by seeding aerobic granules. The stratified structure of nitrifiers in the granules and sufficient residual ammonium concentration contributed to efficient nitrite-oxidizing bacteria repression. The reactor exhibited overcapacity due to high concentration and activity of granular sludge, enabling it to withstand the adverse effects of decreasing temperatures.

Pilot-scale demonstration of a novel process integrating Partial Nitritation with simultaneous Anammox, Denitrification and Sludge Fermentation (PN plus ADSF) for nitrogen removal and sludge reduction

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: A pilot-scale system integrating Partial Nitritation and simultaneous Anammox, Denitrification and Sludge Fermentation (PN + ADSF) process was developed to treat real municipal wastewater. The system achieved desirable total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) concentrations in the effluent and sludge reduction efficiency simultaneously. The characterization on microbial communities revealed the dominant functional bacteria for anammox and denitrification.

The short- and long-term effects of cold-temperature shock on partial nitritation - improved assessment methodology

Mateusz Muszynski-Huhajlo et al.

Summary: This research provides insights into the effect of temperature shock on nitrifiers and highlights the need for improvements in the current assessment approach. The study demonstrates that fluctuations in nitrifier concentration affect the estimation of temperature correction coefficient, leading to inaccurate prediction of the temperature shock effect. The research also shows faster acclimatization of biomass to lower temperature. These findings have implications for microbial communities involved in biological wastewater treatment processes.

Shunyi Li et al.

Summary: The study successfully initiated nitritation-denitrification SBR within 5 days by maintaining proper conditions, proposed the first derivatives of DO and ORP as process control parameters, and achieved a high N-NH4+ removal efficiency of 97% and nitrite accumulation rate of 98% under real-time control.

From freshwater anammox bacteria (FAB) to marine anammox bacteria (MAB): A stepwise salinity acclimation process

Victory Fiifi Dsane et al.

Summary: The study found that the impact of stepwise introduction of salinity on the anammox process depends on the salt concentration; nitrogen removal efficiency remains stable at lower salt levels, but effluent nitrogen concentrations fluctuate significantly as salinity increases; adaptation to high salinity conditions may lead to microbial aggregation and the emergence of new saline-dependent species.

Influence of seasonal temperature change on autotrophic nitrogen removal for mature landfill leachate treatment with high-ammonia by partial nitrification-Anammox process

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: This study established a denitrification-partial nitritation-anaerobic ammonia oxidation system for efficient nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate, and investigated the effects of seasonal temperature changes in a non-temperature-control environment. The results showed that controlling the nitrogen load at low temperatures can achieve stable nitrogen removal efficiency.

Impact of the nitrifying community dynamics on the partial nitritation process performed by an AOB-enriched culture in a granular sludge airlift reactor

Clara Reino et al.

Summary: The study focused on the performance of partial nitritation process under mainstream conditions, revealing that changes in SRT, DO concentration, and temperature have a significant impact on the development of nitrifying community, especially the dynamics of NOB population. Long-term exposure to low temperature and subsequent temperature variability influenced the competitiveness among nitrifiers and the growth of species previously undetected.

Daniel Hosseinlou

Summary: The SAO/PND system efficiently removes organic carbon and nitrogen from highly polluted streams through anaerobic oxidation and partial nitrification-denitrification processes, showing high removal efficiencies and compliance with international discharge standards. The system is cost-effective, energy efficient, and has a small footprint, with less intensive operation and maintenance requirements.
