Progress for Co-Incorporation of Polydopamine and Nanoparticles for Improving Membranes Performance

Nada Abounahia et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the incorporation of polydopamine and nanomaterial fillers for membrane modification. Specifically, the use of graphene oxide nanoparticles with polydopamine is discussed for enhancing membrane properties. The paper also reviews the studies on using polydopamine as a nanofiller to optimize membrane performance. Perspectives and future research directions are provided for the co-incorporation of mussel-inspired polydopamine and nanoparticles. Overall, this review provides insights into designing new polymeric membranes for water treatment based on adhesive mussel-inspired polydopamine polymer and nanomaterial combinations.

Improved Forward Osmosis Performance of Thin Film Composite Membranes with Graphene Quantum Dots Derived from Eucalyptus Tree Leaves

Haleema Saleem et al.

Summary: This study addresses the challenges in forward osmosis (FO) by incorporating graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in thin-film composite (TFC) membranes and using a polyethersulfone nanofiber support. The TFC membranes with GQDs showed improved FO performance with increased water flux, reduced solute flux and good antifouling properties.

Vacuum membrane distillation for desalination: Scaling phenomena of brackish water at elevated temperature

Y. S. Chang et al.

Summary: Membrane fouling or scaling is a major issue in membrane distillation during desalination, particularly due to the deposition of inorganic compounds at high temperatures. Further investigation into the effects of temperature, inorganic compounds, and membrane properties is necessary. In this study, it was found that a commercial hydrophobic polypropylene hollow fibre membrane with smaller pore size experienced more severe scaling with inorganic compounds at elevated feed temperatures, providing important insights for operational design in vacuum membrane distillation for desalination.

Fouling of polyelectrolyte multilayer based nanofiltration membranes during produced water treatment: The role of surfactant size and chemistry

Ettore Virga et al.

Summary: Large volumes of water become contaminated with various chemical agents during Oil & Gas exploration activities, resulting in a complex wastewater stream known as produced water (PW). Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are a promising alternative for the treatment of PW to facilitate its re-use, but membrane fouling remains a major obstacle. The study found that fouling of PEM-based NF membranes during the treatment of artificial produced water is mainly caused by surfactant uptake inside of the PEM coating.

Protocol for Preparing Synthetic Solutions Mimicking Produced Water from Oil and Gas Operations

Dareen Dardor et al.

Summary: Produced water is the water associated with hydrocarbons during oil and gas extraction. Efforts to enhance produced water management include developing novel membrane materials for oil-water separation. This study developed a protocol for preparing synthetic solutions representing actual produced water characteristics and behavior, enabling performance comparisons of different oil-water separation membranes at the bench scale level. The prepared recipe was proven to be reproducible, homogeneous, stable, and comparable to actual produced water field samples.
