Impact of multiple demand side management programs on the optimal operation of grid-connected microgrids

R. Seshu Kumar et al.

Summary: This paper introduces various demand-side management strategies into microgrid energy management. A stochastic EMS framework is developed to implement flexible load shaping, price-based, and incentive-based demand response programs in the presence of non-dispatchable energy resources. The study utilizes a novel metaheuristic algorithm to enhance energy efficiency and optimize energy utilization in a modified IEEE-34 node distribution feeder-based MG network.

A review on long-term electrical power system modeling with energy storage

Chun Sing Lai et al.

Summary: Driven by the demand for intermittent power generation, Energy Storage (ES) will be widely adopted in future electricity grids to provide flexibility and resilience. However, existing models are inadequate to address grids with a high percentage of renewables and ES, and there is a challenge in integrating short-term temporal changes in LEPSMs due to model complexity and computational cost. Therefore, there is a need for a novel long-term electrical power system modeling framework that can effectively incorporate ES and low-carbon power generation.

Role of policy in the development of business models for battery storage deployment: Hawaii case study

Aravind Retna Kumar et al.

Summary: Hawaii's push for 100% renewable energy has led to rapid growth in renewable generation resources, but grid issues have arisen due to the isolated nature of Hawaii's grid. The state plans to address these issues by using battery storage, with three main business models identified for successful deployment: Colocated Front-of-the-Meter, Behind-the-Meter, and Aggregated Behind-the-meter. Multiple barriers related to market demand, project economics, interconnection, and market participation must be overcome for successful deployment of battery storage.

An economic assessment of behind-the-meter photovoltaics paired with batteries on the Hawaiian Islands

Di Wu et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenges faced by Hawaii with increasing solar generation and the potential of demand response. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved the Hawaiian Electric Company's revised portfolio of DR programs. Research shows that pairing BESS with PV can generate multiple value streams for Hawaii's power grid, with compensation from DR programs playing a significant role in improving cost-effectiveness.

Making the case for time-of-use electric rates to boost the value of battery storage in commercial buildings with grid connected PV systems

Sergio B. Sepulveda-Mora et al.

Summary: Delaying battery replacement has significant economic benefits, as letting the battery degrade to 50% of initial capacity is comparable to a 30% reduction in battery capital cost during the project lifetime. The ability of a building to benefit from solar-plus-storage depends on the degradation limit and tariff structure, but not strongly on load pattern and size. Time-of-use tariffs are expected to promote rapid cost-effective adoption of PV systems with batteries in commercial buildings in the near future.
